I haven't heard anything for a while about it closing down. About a year ago they did shut down a large part of it because of criminal activity, but I haven't heard anything since. I guess it depends on your definition of "party". If by party you mean you want to smoke weed, then you don't have to worry because the only things they were shutting down in the RLD were the brothels.

You have a link about them closing down the Red Light District?

It's fine, they have some fashion windows now which are stupid imo. There are still loads of beautiful women and some coffeeshops but don't go to those ones. Go party in a club or something or go smoke a spliff or 3 by yourself in Vondel park, talk to the ducks.

I would have to agree with Reefer Rouge. If people watching is your thing, then the Red Light District is the place to be. But if you would rather smoke some good herb, you will have to go a little bit further. For selection, go to Barney's or Greenhouse. For quality, go to Homegrown Fantasy (home to many frequently-visiting Americans and Brits).

Alkmaar also has a Red Light District, but the last time I walked past it was hard to compare to Amsterdam's!

The red light district remains , 19 premises were closed because of links with crime.
The laws regarding coffee shops changed in so much as there will be no new licences granted , this means no increase in the number of coffeeshops but those that exist can continue to operate , they can also be sold complete with the licence.
Other than that the status quo remains.

They are only cleaning it up. They probably won't shut it down entirely.

I have been in amsterdam twice and the red-light on more than one occasion...I also have a friend living there....and as far as I can see and what people tell me...it is being "cleaned up" but as it is it is one of the cleanest red-light and a major tourist attraction more than anything at this stage! The intention at the moment in government is to slowly close it up until its not viable although the dutch government are often erratic with their proposals I cant see it closing down because of all the spin off it generates! As well as that when I was there in January it was exactly the same as it was three years previous when I was there! so happy days...its a bit of craic that spot, would be a shame to see it go even if it was in the distant future!
peas out:hippy:Why do people point to their wrists when asking for the time, but don\'t point to their crotch when they ask where the bathroom is?

I was there in Jan of this year as well, was still fantastic. Word is the dutch gvt is pretty unhappy with the reputation it has and the amount of fuckwits the city attracts. Basically english guys on their stack parties

Still has women in windows, more coffee shops than you can ever visit and a great vibe, so seems like not much has changed? I wouldn't know though as I'm too young to be able to compare it to 10+ years ago.
