    First time set up.

Hello yall, after 20 years of throwing my money away i finally got enoeph nutz together to start growing myself. I have been doing research for the last month and this is what i decided to do. Any help or comments would be much appreciated!

The only practical location is my closet. Its a pretty big 2 sliding door type about 3 feet deep and 8 feet long and 7 feet tall.

I decided to go with a very simple Hydro passive resoviour system using rockwool. I don't quite understand how it works yet but the thoery sounds very easy. Basing my assumptions from reading this article.

After doing some basic research i finally pulled the trigger on a 400w HPS/MH switchable lighting system i got on ebay from HTG Supply

400 watt SWITCHABLE GROW LIGHT w HPS Sodium + MH Halide - eBay (item 390001690763 end time Nov-10-08 11:49:00 PST)

Seems like a pretty good one but like i said i really have no idea what this can do and how many plants i can grow. I was hoping to get about 4-6 nice size plants going. I want to stay under the limit for Washington State.

I am trying to get some clones from some friends but if that doesnt work ill have to get some seeds. I see those ads in High Times but i would rather not take the risk.

Anywho, dont mean to start writing a book so ill wrap this up. Does this sound like a good setup to you vets out there? :rastasmoke:

    Welcome friend!

Well your space sounds great to me, i'd love to have that option. i built my room in a basement and it's not super stealth.

Are you planning on doing both flower and veg in the same closet? Cuz probably the most logical setup would be to split the closet in half vertically.
veg on one side, flower on the other.

In that case you'd have roughly 3x4x7 to flower. That isn't a huge space so if you flower them small (maybe 10"-12" tall) you could probably fit 4-6. it's gonna be tight though. I personally would do 1 larger plant. 400w would be the most i would put in this size space, And even then you'll need good ventilation. But i use 2 400w's and i love them, no need for bigger bulbs in my setup.

If you plan on just using the whole closet to veg, then flower...you could fit a few more, or maybe 3 larger plants. If it's your first grow, i'd definitely start with fewer plants until you get the hang of it, regardless of room size. And a 400w might have trouble spanning 8 feet of space. Either get a light mover or a second light (250w-400w).

As far as a passive hydro system, i couldn't say enough good things about DWC. It's super cheap and easy to build, very easy to maintain, and very productive. I can put a few threads together for you if you want. And i would use Hydroton instead of rockwool, The small rockwool cubes are ok for clones but i've had trouble with the bigger cubes.

That light should be fine, HTG is a great shop.

I'm sure others will be around shortly to tell you more.

Thanks for the great advice skeet! I will go with the Hydroton whatever the heck that is That would be really cool if you could put some helpfull links together for me! Glad you think its a quality light. Since it's only one i can't really split the closet into veg and flower compartments. I guess in hindsight i should have got 2 lights and skipped the combo light. Oh well live and learn. I think i will try 3 plants and make them monsters! My main concearn right now is ventilation since it is a closet in an apt i cant go drilling holes all over the place. I was just going to put a few computer fans in there and open the closet doors ocasionally to put in fresh air. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance!

If you could split the closet all you would need is a ballast and hood.

Good light and good advice your getting. However do you under stand the difference between wick and DWC (deep water culture) ? You want to look up DWC. I had a drip dwc. You can drip the whole grow but you don't need it when the roots hang in oxygenated water. Just to get clones or seedlings started. Just an airstone a bucket or container some netpots and hydrotron maybe 1 inch rockwool for clones and seeds. Nutrients and cal-mag. about oh 100 bucks but worth it.

Jump in it's easy. Oh, hydrotron are expanded clay pellets that hold just the right amount of water as to not rot your root.

We must figure a ventilations system for you and what about the smell. I went to my bro's house and could smell 14 inch papaya's 5 feet from outside his door. You can't smell plants when you live with them. LOL

Sup Grow, Your 400w will do good in that space. if your gonna go from seed scrog in that tight space your yield will increase...

I'd personally go with a ebb n flow sog w/ clones in that space... you could split the closet and veg your clones in a system the same size with cfls and then tranfer them to the bloom side after harvest, then replace the veg clones with fresh rooted ones , and have a perpetual Sea Of Green

there are so many options to go with, 3 5 gal. DWC buckets from seed then scrog them using the whole closet would probably get a good yield...

good luck and let me know if you want any help building and I'll run you thru the build...
