Well...you have to start from seed first unless you already have clones so I am assuming you will have approx a 50/50 male & female ratio to begin with, so the first cycle you are going to want to isolate the best mothers and get rid of those males (unless you want to make more seeds)..the best way to do this is to veg the seeds to maturity and find the males & females...some strains indicate well before flowering at like 4 or 5 weeks of growth under HPS lights like Sweet Tooth from Spice of Life seeds which indicates sex under constant 24 hours of light and is very high yielding and a blueberry cross x sweet pink grapefruit (NL#1) cross. Some strains do not and you will have to wait until flowering starts before you know what is what and this can cause hermies sometimes on the clones if you take them from a flowering plant and then try to switch them back into veg under constant light, but some strains are not bothered by this at all..it just depends.

So when you do figure out which ones are females take a few clones of each female plant and try to look for the ones that have the most branches & potential bud sites and have the darkest green & most healthy compact squat plant structure. Look for things like thick stems and the most desirable smell also. Try to take clones from at least 5 different females minimum for a total of say 20 - 25 clones or so which will become small potential mothers while the other plants they were taken from are flowering. Grow these under a small MH light or under a few CFL's or even a bank of good full spectrum flouro's...plants don't need a ton of light to veg from clone and you want to give them low levels of light while growing roots because young clones are very tender. You also don't want them to get too big while you are waiting for the first plants to be done.

So when the first cycle of seed grown plants are half-way or further through flowering you will probably be able to start to determine the best female plants based on the results you are seeing in that first crop. Now of course you have your clones and originals marked so you know what is what as far as matching back clones to the plants they were taken from. You are basically looking to isolate the best mothers so you can continue to grow them out and use them for a steady supply of clones.

When the first crop is done you can use the plants that were not the most desireable for a second crop since you know they are all females and you won't be keeping them all as mothers. Grow out & flower these for a second batch and from then on you should be able to cut and grow clones from those select mother plants for future cycles.

This is of course assuming you are not acting in conflict with the law and live somewhere that growing MJ is perfectly legal, otherwise disregard this advice!
