I'll do my best to answer your questions about potting soil, however, I don't have any practical growing experience with the MJ plant specifically.

The short answer:
Growers here seem to use Pro-Mix Bx a good bit. Its not usually available at the box stores, its more of a specialty grower/nursery product. Look at growers supply and hydroponics stores or check the Pro-Mix website.

I've also seen recommendations for Miracle Grow Organic Choice brand, which I have seen at the box stores. It has less added nutrients. If you decide on this, buy some perlite to mix with it.

As far as Hyponex goes, my experience is save your money, its total crap.

The long answer:
Any reputable potting mix should have the contents on the label, analogous to the labels on food. As for Miracle Grow (MG), which seems to be available everyf*ingwhere, I know there is a label on the bag. And, if you Google it, you will find that MG and Hyponex are both made by the same company,
Scotts.

Most of the MG and Schultz soil mixes are not only too hot for MJ but also much too heavy (is the bag heavy? that's a good indication). You generally need to amend these dense soils with maybe 30% perlite to lighten them and improve drainage and aeration.

You can make your own unadulterated potting mix cheaper than premixed but you have to have room to store it in bulk. Clean garbage cans with lids are a good choice. The mix is approx. 2/3 spagnum peat moss + 1/3 perlite + small addition of dolomitic lime.
