Doctor G's Tales of the 60's, at the movies

2001
A Space Odyssey

In1968 a movie was released that was supposed to change the way we
looked at movies. Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C Clarke joined their talents and
gave us the movie ??2001?. Kubrick was already well known for his movies
including ??A Clockwork Orange?. Clarke was well known as an author, in both the
science and science fiction categories. The movie trailers for 2001 looked like
something you might see in the light show of a Grateful Dead concert. I had
experienced LSD trips like that and I had to see this movie.
2001, A Space Odyssey was released on a Friday night and we made
plans to attend. There was Ralph and his girlfriend, Frank and his brother Bruce,
Bob made it, as well as Jeff, Tom and Sean. My VW bus was pretty well packed.
Each person that wanted a ride had a different idea what kind of drugs we should
be taking for the show. Ralph and Frank brought a dozen hits of some purple
haze LSD, Bruce had stolen a small tank of Nitrous Oxide. Sean and Tom must
have rolled twenty joints and Jeff snagged some tincture of opium from his
families medicine chest. Ralph??s girlfriend Sarah, decided what we really needed
was two dozen heavy duty pot brownies. I had a little honey (hash) oil left over
from a previous deal so we were set for the show.
The theater was about an hour away so we wanted to make sure we got a
good buzz on and started smoking about five joints at a time. Jeff would smear a
little tincture of opium or some of my hash oil on them and then just fire it up and
pass it around. Sarah passed around the shoe box full of brownies and we all
occasionally nibbled a bit. Frank talked Tom into taking half a hit of the purple
haze but then lost the other half some where in the bus. By the time we got to the
show we were all working an a killer buzz. I snagged a hit of the haze and made
my way over to the line to get in.
As we waited for the line I noticed that Bruce??s tank of laughing gas was
not completely covered by his coat. Sarah was offering brownies to any one in
line who wanted one while Frank and Ralph were having trouble communicating.
Tom wasn??t doing too bad, and neither was Jeff. We managed to stay together
and when we got to the ticket window some how I got pushed to the front. How
many I heard the lady behind the glass asked just as the LSD giggles started to
take over. I had to bite my hand to get under control but after just a little while I
was able to tell her there were nine of us. I handed her a couple of twenties and
stuffed the change into my pocket without counting it. I managed to get the group
away from the booth and we headed for the door. I tried to pair the group up with
a less bent person holding the ticket and responsible for getting the giggler past
the ticket taker.
When 2001, A Space Odyssey was released it was the future of movies in
more ways than one. Not satisfied with the conventional flat screen Kubrick was
experimenting with a curved screen. Up in the projection booth six projectors ran
simultaneously each one focused on a different portion of the screen. The actual
screen a little longer than your average screen but it curved maybe fifteen feet in
the center. The ends of the screen stuck out fifteen feet further that the middle of
the screen. It was supposed to give you a more three dimensional effect from the
movie. We immediately headed down to the first row. I wasn??t sure what every
one was thinking but as a group they took over the front row seats.
In those days there were not as many commercials and the theater
darkened shortly after we settled in. Ralph passed another round of purple haze
down our row and Sarah made sure the brownies made the rounds again. About
half an hour into the flick I heard giggling coming from Bruce and Bob and I knew
they had been hitting the laughing gas.
2001, A Space Odyssey is a movie that jumps from prehistoric times to
some very interesting outer space scenes. At one point there is a scene where
the pilots are maneuvering carefully to bring the moon hopper to land. Ralph and
Frank were convinced they were going to crash so they got up from their seats
and moved to the carpeted area inside the curvature of the screen. They gave a
very good impression of controlling the vehicle and bringing it in for a safe
landing. While a few of the members of the audience may have appreciated their
actions the ushers did not. And in a very short period of time we were all outside
getting a lecture about theater etiquette. The usher slammed the door and then
we realized we didn??t have Sarah??s brownies, a couple of the pipes we had, or
Bob??s nitrous tank. There was no real discussion; Sarah convinced Ralph the
movie was over, Frank took a leak in a nearby bush and we headed back to my
VW bus for a smoke and the ride home.
I went back next week by myself and saw the entire movie that time.

God damn, I wish I'd seen it in a theater with a curved screen when I saw it.

I did see it on acid, though. The only way to see it, really.
