There is no God, well not on UK buses

I read this with interest this morning and thought to myself how different the UK is from the U.S, I can't imagine this happening over the pond.

    From the BBC Website:
BBC NEWS | England | London | 'No God' slogans for city's buses

The 'Just Giving' Atheist bus campaign donation site
    Justgiving - Atheist Bus Campaign

In just a day the site has raised over £20,000!

Pretty good considering they were expecting £5000. Was listening to Five Live last night and they had a debate about the advertising. They had someone from the Humanist organization and some bloke from a Christian society. The christian was all on his high horse and scoffing at all things atheist. He then stated that The Origin of Species was the atheist bible. Richard Bacon then said that surely that was incorrect as there were atheists before 1859. Cue a big back track with stuttering embarrassment.

The guy was the Christian version of Richard Dawkins and got right on my tits.

At least there was a more humble Christian who phoned in to apologize for the arse.

while religious organizations are attempting to sell the idea of their god, such atheist causes are just trying to convince us of the absence of something. does that strike anyone else as a bit odd? don't these fools understand that such blatant attempts to tear down the socially accepted mythos merely strengthens the resolve of the faithful to redouble their efforts to indoctrinate the rest of the world? seems like a rather foolish waste of time and effort.

That point was brought up on the radio show last night. The Humanist guy seemed to think there were lots of troubled confused unsure people out there that will be reassured by the ads. Personally I think the message is pretty weak and will make a tiny impact. I would prefer something like... "Is your religion lying to you? Find your own truth"

Yea "There probably isn't a God" is just lame. First off, 'Probably'? Hello? "There probably isn't an invisible, all powerful, immortal, physical-body lacking, world-creating creature floating around in the sky and occasionally getting virgins knocked up and flooding planets when he's pissed." (then we could get into his water-walking rising from the dead levitating up to heaven son too, but you get the point) Hello! This is 2008, not the freaking dark ages! Of course there isn't a God! Anyone with a grade-school education would laugh their asses off at religion if it hadn't been sold to them when they were too young to know better. Hell, Santa is more believable than all that crap - all he does is distribute presents once a year to little boys and girls who don't piss their parents off too much.

How bout "Morality is a product of humanity and civilization, not handed down by imaginary spirits - we don't need fantasies to be good people."

Or "Do good because it's the right thing to do... Not because someone told you when you were a little kid that Santa or Jehovah is going to reward you."

Or maybe "Less time praying, more time making the world a better place - this world is real, heaven isn't."

But no... they're raising cash to put "There probably isn't a God" on the side of a bus... Oh well.

"Invisible Pink Unicorns are beings of great spiritual power. We know this because they are capable of being invisible and pink at the same time. Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them." â?? Steve Eley

because they are invisible, are we taking their pinkness on faith or have you had some sort of revelation that we should all be made aware of. this is of the utmost importance to me because i had heard of the mystical "invisible pink fluffy bunnies", but i was unaware before this that the invisible unicorns were also pink. do you suppose there is some link between the color pink and spiritual supremacy? do you think that if the invisible unicorns or bunnies were blue they would be any less important to our spiritual enlightenment?

I listened to the same show and the leader of Christian Voice is a guy called Stephen Green.

In all honesty Stephen Green is a total twat, he doesn't speak for the majority of Christians imho and most would distance themselves from him. Total Bigot.

The "Probably" bit was a piss-take of the Carlsberg beer adverts, I think.

The toal is now over £80,000 raised, 'probably' enough for a new message and a much bigger/wider campaign. Quite a few people donating were from the U.S too - I read most of the comments.

    Now where's that spare £10 I had....
