Breeding Box- so easy a caveman can do it!

Backing up your genetics is an important part of giving yourself an out in case you have to dismantle your grow. If you have ever had to bail, you will know that the hardest part of all is finding a safe spot to stash your genetics collection, and if you can't, having that debate with yourself that goes something like, " I feel the hairs on the back of my neck sticking up but I CAN'T lose my genetics so I'll sit here and cross my fingers and hope that I don't get raided." STUPID!!!! Stupid stupid. So don't put yourself in that position. Back up your stuff!

    You need:
One rubbermaid tub that is at least 20" deep
One 4" inline duct booster fan
    One power tool replacement cord
    A 4" hole saw and a drill
A 1" hole saw or spade bit
    A cheap timer
    A pair of stockings
Sharp, heavy pruning shears or tin snips
A small packet of wire nuts (you will use 3 of them)
A corded socket and daylight CFL to go in it- smaller is fine; you want SURVIVAL not YIELD and a big CFL may get too hot.
Some small pots and clones off your parent plants.
    Electricity

Cut the exhaust hole in the lid.
Twist white to white, black to black, green to ground.
Snugly cap the raw wires. DO NOT just tape them!
Snip a small notch to accept the light cord.
Fit the fan so that the flow direction is UP.

Cut your intake holes in the bottom corners of the box- all of them. Multiple intake points will help with internal circulation since you won't run an interior fan.
Assemble the whole thing so that the light is hanging free just beneath the fan, and clip it in place with a bulldog clip or something.
Put your stockings over the vent to minimize pollen.
Find a nice dark corner of the cellar to stick it- it is NOT lightproof!- plug it in, and fill it with plants!

In 2 months you will have seeds.

    Great post, as usual !
I really should do it, but I got a problem... I already killed my male plants, so I only have female plants and clones of these right now... I'll take this as a beginner mistake.

I don't want to hijack you're post but I'll like if you can check the little transplant guide I've made, it may help some new members: http://boards.cannabis.com/indoor-gr...ick-guide.html

Awesome! i've been thinking about makin some seeds for a while now.

just a few lame questions for ya...

I've got no males and my ladies are pretty stable. Common sense tells me just to toss a few clones in there on 12/12 and eventually they will herm and toss me a few beans...right?

are those seeds then more likely to herm?

How much attention/maintenance do you give them in this box?

    thanks
    Skeet.

    Bitchin'...

Went to Target this evening to get some household type shit and saw a perfect tub for this box. needless to say... $6.50 and an hour later i had my own breeding box.

    Here's a few shots.

I'm using a 3 light fixture with just one bulb for now. I had an old iMac G3 sitting around that i was NEVER going to use so i pulled it apart and snagged the fan from inside. Hooked up a power supply and it's suckin' air like...well...like a fan...

I'm a hydro guy through and through...i have no clue about soil and i'm not about to start. So this will end up being a modified DWC. Probably a kitty litter pan in the bottom with 6" net pots sitting on airstones.

I really love how the box came out. And i love the fact that i can add 2 more bulbs and maybe when i'm done breeding i can have a small stealth tub grow with little modification.

    alright...on to the photos.
thanks again stinky. this is so sweet.

Dude. Yours is, like, TOTALLY awesomer than mine!
You know that cheap timer you got? Stick several female clones in there. Set it to a fucked up off-on schedule, like 12/12 until inception of flower, then a multiple on-off per day schedule, and wait for nanners. They will come. You will get a generation that is called S1 (first selfed generation) but using multiple individuals, like clones from different from-seed mothers, will give you a bit of diversity.

    Haha. thanks for kind words.

I've got a tray full of clones that i was just gonna toss/donate but not anymore!!! can't wait to get home tonight and confuse the shit out of these girls. prepare to see some effed up Northern Lights x Skunk 1 x White Rhino...

If anyone is interested i've attached a pic from Lowes of the light fixture i'm using. You need to attach your own power cord but that's a piece of cake... Get a heavy duty, grounded extension cord (8 feet is more than enough) cut off the female side and strip it down to the 3 wires (Black, white, and Green) then just match them to the wires on the fixture with some wire nuts and electrical tape. EZ.

    peace friends,
    Skeet.

IMVHO you should run off backups of each strain individually, or ONE male crossed with females of many strains, so you know who'surdaddy. Big issue with seed backup. If you are forced to do it by herms, just do one strain at a time. If you want to make a known cross, put in the one you want to be pollen donor 2 weeks early and mess up its light schedule until you see nanners, THEN put in the female on a CORRECT light cycle so SHE doesn't flip on ya.

This is dumb, but I take it this breeding box should be kept away from your other girls?

Definitely, unless you upgrade the filter. The stockings will HELP keep pollen down (I spray mine with SMC, which dries sticky and I assume will trap SOME pollen), but certainly can't be trusted to do a good job of it.
