Hagee had endorsed Senator John McCain in the 2008 presidential election. McCain initially said, "I'm very proud to have Pastor Hagee's support",[54] but after a publicity backlash over Hagee's alleged anti-Catholicism, McCain stated "I repudiate any comments that are made, including Pastor Hagee's, if they are anti-Catholic or offensive to Catholics."[55]

McCain at a Houston town hall meeting stated, "Yesterday, Pastor John Hagee endorsed my candidacy for president in San Antonio, Texas. However, in no way did I intend for his endorsement to suggest that I in turn agree with all of Pastor Hagee's views, which I obviously do not".[56] This controversial endorsement however was a McCain's strategic key victory, for he has struggled to win the support of the Christian far right.[57] However, McCain has strategically distanced himself from Hagee due to his controversial public statements,[58] such as his "claims that Hurricane Katrina was 'the judgment of God against New Orleans.'" Concerns over the risks of religious endorsement have been expressed, despite attempts of some religious leaders to remain neutral.[59] On April 20, 2008, while appearing on This Week with George Stephanopoulos, McCain admitted that it was "probably a mistake" to court and accept Hagee's endorsement, although he's still relieved to have it.[60][61][62]

With regard to Hagee's purported anti-Catholic bigotry, in an Associated Press interview McCain said, "We've had a dignified campaign, and I repudiate any comments that are made, including Pastor Hagee's, if they are anti-Catholic or offensive to Catholics," and he further explained, "I sent two of my children to Catholic school. I categorically reject and repudiate any statement that was made that was anti-Catholic, both in intent and nature."[55]

On May 22, 2008, despite Hagee's letter of apology to William Donohue, McCain publicly rejected Hagee's endorsement after the release of audio of a sermon calling Adolf Hitler a "hunter" whose Holocaust was part of a divine plan to drive Jews from Europe to Palestine. In a statement, McCain said: "Obviously, I find these remarks and others deeply offensive and indefensible," and "I did not know of them before Reverend Hagee's endorsement, and I feel I must reject his endorsement as well."[63] McCain tried to further distance himself from Hagee stating, "I've never been in Pastor Hagee's church or Pastor Parsley's church. I didn't attend their church for 20 years, and I'm not a member of their church. I received their endorsement, which did not mean that I endorsed their views."
