hey,
if they are already arranged close together, and re-arranging them will be more trouble than you're willing to overcome, then yes as far as i understand you can trim areas underneath that aren't getting enough light, since they won't produce buds anyway and will only hoard vital nutrients and allocate energy into leaf production, which you don't want in a SOG setup. if you want to use the 'sea of green' method you better kick them into flower early, while the plants are between 6-12 inches tall. sounds like you're aiming in that direction, so don't let them grow too big. 9"-12" square inches per plant will concentrate cola growth at the top centre of the plant, all other areas being negligible. good luck.

I've had up to 4 huge plants in there and they were falling all over each other and blocking light and just creating a really difficult work environment. But they grew, and they yielded about 4.5 oz per plant. Not the best, but not bad either.
The northern lights strain that i grow loves having tons of room and will spread itself out creating a very open, airy, lighted plant with huge dense buds. The White Rhino i grow needs the room because it's a huge stretcher that falls all over itself and needs to be tied up/down/all around.
Sea of green is usually many small plants in a tight space. People usually put any where from 1 - 4 plants per square foot. Do some reading on SOG and Check out see more buds Vol 1 (on youtube or torrents) and check out how tight the plants are in the 3 different systems he describes. If you watch that vid you'll get a good idea of the pros and cons of space or lack there of. Of course he looks like he's showing a commercial operation and we can't talk about that here.
Also check out Stinky's thread on efficient canopy.

That should give you something to shoot for and give you a good idea of how to space your plants.
Good luck. Keep us posted.

You got some good answers. Just my opion.
If you put 12 or if you put 2 in the space will yeild close to the same. Yes spaced out plants get more to the bottom while close has more tops.
Now what it sounds like your descibing is a screen of green. To get max yeild in a small place. A screen with 3 to 4 inch holes are placed over a good number of plant at about 12 inches high. A standing cage. Veg them and wieve branches through the screen. When they flower you have many buds about the same size.
What they busted me with was a true sea of green. I had 10 gallon containers with 6 plants in each one. 5 all toghether. I had a mother/clone room, a veg room and a flower room. 6 plants go into flower, one month later 6 more plants go in to flower and so on. In the stages of clone and veg are 3 more containers of 6 plants. Each month I would harvest betwen 12 and 16 oz's. Well once you get here it's gavy but a lot of work to get there.
Just thought I throw in the sea of green story. Watch your back. Tell no one. My Nephew got me.

question for you loc, related to this thread; i don't have enough space to have so many convenient separate rooms, so instead i plan on using segregated shelves. i have 3 spaces to work with total. two shelves (18" W x 50" L x 36" H each), as well as the main closet which is fairly big (5' x 6' x 8'). how would you best have things arranged in this setup? i was thinking one shelf for clones and veg, and the other for mothers, with the main space for flowering. but you had yours setup differently, with clones and mothers together. is there a special reason for this? are light requirements similar for clones and mothers? Thanks loc. later.
