Do ALL federal workers get tested?
I'm applying for a position with the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC). Anyone know whether I would be subjected to a drug test and, if so, whether it would be a hair test? I could probably pass a urine test, but I'm dead in the water if it's a hair test.
I've looked all over the web for this info and haven't been able to find anything. All I've seen is "About 400,000 federal workers in testing designated positions â?? those who have security clearances, carry firearms, deal with public safety or national security, or are presidential appointees â?? are drug tested when they apply for jobs. " If I'm going to be asked to submit a hair sample, I'm not even going to bother pursuing the position.jaydreb Reviewed by jaydreb on . Do ALL federal workers get tested? Don't know about the SEC but most federal workers in my area aren't tested at all and that includes people that in civil work would be considered safety sensitive positions.

Thanks. The job posting does indicate that there would be a "Background Check," but doesn't say anything about a drug test. The position would be in the legal department.
It's not something that would require a security clearance.

I had a 'moderate risk' clearance as a federal employee. I was not tested. From what I saw, the job listing should say if it's a tdp (testing designated position). Background check just means they either send letters, call, or visit your references, old neighbors, ect. How far in depth the background check is depends on the risk level of your position.

Well, the good news is that I have in fact been offered the position.
They mentioned that they would be sending me a background questionnaire, but still haven't said anything about whether I will be drug tested. I figure it would suspicious to ask.
Does anyone have any more information? Anyone know what labs the federal gov't uses? Would it be a standard, unobserved test in which I would be able to sub?
Would appreciate any information.
