I can very much relate to you on that, I didn't "get" phish for quite some time as well. Some cubensis mushrooms changed that, but that's another story LOL. I'd suggest trying to track down some pre-1996 Phish. That's about the time they really started exploring a lot "trance" spaces in their music (if that makes sense). Prior to that, the music had a much more focused groove. There's a couple of shows from 92 in Vermont with Carlos Santana that are just absurd I'll try and track down for you.
