as far as soil goes, i'm kinda clueless. however, i do have in my possession the "grower's bible" by jorge cervantes. this helps to give some feel for soil grows for me.
dunno about those spots, but you can use planter size to limit height.
that screen might be a good idea if you're gonna be away four days.
