Not really. 30x power magnification is minumun. 60x is even better. (Unless, you are Clark Kent)
10% amber is perfect for me.

The best you are going to do is put them in bright light and look for sparkle like diamonds- sparkle is clear trichomes. Beyond that, get a magnifier.

Any scientific supply shop, any hobby store, geez Radio Shack (aka Electron Hut for you Dilbert fans) has them!

Radio Shack pocket microscope. 60X100. ..best thing about it?...it's got a built in light....about $12.
Snip a very, very small piece of bud leaf...and put it on a white plate and scope out the trichs...

10x is plenty big enough and far easier to see thru than a high powered glass. the higher the power the more steady you need to keep your hand that's holding it but with 10x you can still see the entire "mushroom" shape and its color change very easily, even with the shakiest hands.
i get mine from ebay for about 5-8 bucks each...15-20 for the metal cased ones with a built-in light.

been away taking care of the gardens! lots of work when going it alone, as it should be done...and mixed in a little traveling over the summer but i'm back home now and getting ready to start up the basement grow again (it'll be an all dj short blueberry grow this time), just as soon as the outdoor is done! busy busy busy...
the only drawback to the harvest season are all these damn scissor blisters on my fingers...
