    Chavez accepts Russian nuclear offer

    Chavez accepts Russian nuclear offer
    Mon, 29 Sep 2008 08:03:48 GMT
Venezuelan President Chavez (L), Russian PM Putin
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has accepted a Russian offer to help expand his country's civilian nuclear program.

"We are interested in developing nuclear energy." AP quoted Chavez as saying. "Russia is ready to support Venezuela in the development of nuclear energy with peaceful purposes and we already have a commission working on it."

In a meeting with Chavez last week, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow was ready to consider nuclear energy cooperation with Caracas.

During Chavez's visit, Russia also agreed to grant Venezuela a loan of $1 billion for a "military-technical cooperation" program.

Russian 'Peter the Great' for a joint naval exercise with Venezuela

Since 2005, Russia and Venezuela have signed arms contracts worth more than $4.4 billion to supply Caracas with fighter jets, helicopters, and Kalashnikov assault rifles.

The Kremlin has stepped up contacts with Venezuela, Cuba and other Latin American countries after Russia's relations with the United States soured over the Georgia conflict last month.

Venezuela has also moved to defend its interests against US intervention with the expulsion of the US ambassador to Caracas earlier this month following renewed rumors of a US-backed coup attempt.

Last week, a Russian naval squadron sailed for the Caribbean Sea in preparation for joint exercises with Venezuela later this year in the largest Russian naval maneuvers in the Caribbean since the Cold War.

"The Russian fleet has already departed... and should arrive in Venezuela at the end of November for maneuvers to increase our defense capability," AFP quoted Chavez as saying.

"We are not going to invade anyone, or engage in acts of aggression toward anyone," said Chavez. "But no one should mistake our intention -- we are prepared to do everything necessary to defend Venezuelan sovereignty."

guess We're gonna be bombing (or at least be dreamin of doing so) whoever we dont like who is poised to get nuclear technology... who invented these stuff? shit wars and power was balanced conventionally before WW II

This is where Iran was at about 8 years ago... pressure slowly was built up and stupid things were said by those idiots in Iranian regime and I'm just happy chavez is not all anti-israeli...

wait, he is anti-american, he's gonna be posing existential threat to the US herself! shit!

    but u know what?
I think this is pretty smart a strategy russians and their allies/partners are using if indeed this is going to be an expedited process for venezuela... US will have to choose between military option against these 2 regimes.

and i bet this will only lead to more countries, wether on our side or theirs to seek nuclear technology... peaceful one on paper at least.

Can't blame them for wanting nuclear energy and really can't blame them if they want some nukes. With all the hawks in our government its a good idea to be prepared. I think everyone realizes we really let the cat out of the bag when we developed nuclear weapons. And you can't put it back in. The japanese already payed a huge price and its just a matter of time before another country pays a heavy toll.

Could happen. We need to set an example by drastically reducing our nuclear stockpile. If we don't set an example it will never change. More and more countries will get nukes and eventually some religious wack job will push the button.

Why would the whack job have to be religious?

I honestly don't think us leading by example would do anything....especially at this point in the game. There are just too many people out there with their own agendas. Sure Even if we were able to some how get most countries to standby a nonproliferation treaty, there's always going to be those few countries that keeps them. And all it takes is one country to scare the shit out of every other county and then BAM! Back to start it is.

This realy is not that important. These leaders want nukes to protect and legitimize there standing in the world. Why would they risk sending a couple nukes at us when they know very well that if they did they would have 10 more coming at them. Mutually assured destruction still works.

Now what really scares the hell out of me is a terrorist buying a nuke from the Russian stock pile or from North Korea. Then put it in a container ship and set it off in New York Harbor. THATS SOMETING TO REALY WORRY ABOUT!!

no shit, thats what all the fuss is about... our govt believes these rouge regimes may very well sell it or even hand it out just like that and let others use it against us without any apparent direct involvement of them...

in fact i read somewhere israeili army commander or their ex-commander said Iran has some nuts in power but they are not as crazy as nuking israel, however they are crazy enough to hand it to buncha these terrorist groups to carry it out.

however i think much of this terrorism issue is solvable. they do have some excuses that indeed are partially valid. israel is holding illegal lands since 1967 that even the UN does not recognize and we have military bases all over mideast in arab countries... maybe if we stick to our own business and israel respects the intl laws, we can take away these idiots' excuses from them and expose them for who they are... soon they will lose popularity and power in their regions, thats easy to do and we will have every right to hit them hard if they still keep doing what they do after we took away their excuses

cuz currently we are not successfully rooting them out... its like trying to trim an acre of grass (and growing) with a manual trimmer, it will take forever and before u get to finish 1 round the places u have already worked on will grow right back...
