I think that your points about being included in family activities leading to being more inclusive towards others, and the capitalist one-up-man-ship are right on target. Here Stateside we have the expression 'keeping up with the Joneses' which is all about the need to be accepted by what material wealth/image you display rather than on your substance.

Working on your substance is a life-long project, and best of all, it's FREE, and immaterial, so no one can make you pay for it, or take it from you.
