Aside from my thinking that this thread is a huge load of waffle I just can't believe there are republican potheads! Whoddathunkit?

I think the problem comes is that people compare people who believe in the republican philosophy to the republicans you see in power today. They have strayed very far from what they once stood for; here is an outline of the republican philosophy:

The Republican Philosophy

• THAT those who cannot provide for themselves should be assisted by both government and society, but that every effort should be made to help them become self-supporting, productive citizens with pride in the independence.
  
• THAT equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity belong to all, regardless of race, creed, age, sex or national origin.
  
• THAT the preservation of our Nation and the security of our citizens depend upon the Constitution, the laws, and the courts, and that respect for them is the responsibility of every individual.
  
• THAT government is accountable for maintaining sound money and a responsible economy. Individual rights, liberties and properties are continually eroded when citizens are oppressed by excessive taxation, inflation, government waste and over-regulation.
  
• THAT government is responsible for national defense and that only a strong American can remain a free America.
  
• THAT it is absolutely essential to maintain a strong national defense posture in order that we may at all times negotiate from a position of strength, not weakness, in our continuing efforts toward world peace and friendship.
  
• THAT these concepts are the foundation of our national strength and that the REPUBLICAN PARTY, which is committed to their preservation, is the party of today and the PARTY FOR THE FUTURE.

Is it so hard to believe now that a pot head would be a republican; true to the philosophy which the party once stood for?

They don't care to learn what a real Republican is. Republican to them is the "main" candidates (Bush, McCain, etc.). And if we are gonna play THAT game we should say that all Democrats are Teddy Kennedy, Pelosi and Jimmy Carter.

Of course thats absurd but you could speak till you are blue in the face. No one cares to learn.

What bugs me is that even Bush and McCain still retain parts of what the republican party used to mean. It's just that everyone wants something from the government without doing anything in return. When they don't get their way they throw a tantrum cursing republicans for not giving them a free ticket. Fact of the matter is that republicans tend to believe that you are capable and have the ability to provide for yourself. I see nothing wrong with that philosophy as it is applicable to the majority of people in this country; and the few it's not applicable to... republicans do believe in helping those folks out.

It's just beyond me how people can trash Republicans without even truely knowing what they stand for.

P.S. I have never attached a label to myself, so regardless of beliefs... I will never consider myself Republican or Democrat. I am philosophically against labels. Just wanted to explain...

Well I can't say I blame the Democrats for disliking the current Republicans. They weren't really Republicans at all anyway. Just regular crappy politicians.

However what irks me is that they often fail to realize that their party is JUST as bad.
