I think we CAN honestly blame the Republicans for the vast majority of the mess. It's a two party system, but Dems were completely locked out in the first 6 years of Bush's term. Almost all votes went straight down the party line, and the Republicans got exactly everything they wanted against the will of Democrats. It was a fuck up, and Republicans have to own it.
