The policy differences between Obama and Edwards are not very big, because they are both Democrats and have a fairly similar platform. But the speeches were very different. Edwards theme all along was the "two Americas" theme. Obama does not play the class-war angle as much as Edwards -- he is more unifying. I don't think he beat Edwards because he is black, as you suggested.

I was not suggesting he beat Edwards because he was black. I suggested he won the nomination because of it. I only compared him to Edwards because their policies are almost identical even though their rhetoric is slightly different. So, my opinion is that the only difference between the two is color

Palin is talking about having been a small-town mayor and says, "And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves." So at this point I'm thinking this is great, we will get to hear what she did as mayor. And then she says, "I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a "community organizer," except that you have actual responsibilities." Ooooh! Snap! That's a zinger! The thing is she never said "what the job invovles" like she said she was going to in the previous sentence...

I still think she's got potential. I don't like the bible thumping part but all candidates have to say they believe in god or they don't get elected. I don't think she's a very good speaker, but that will probably improve. I'd rather have her as the presidential candidate than McCain.

I understand that the convention is not about specifics (althought it should at least paint in broad strokes what the party plans to do). I know it's a big cheerleading session mostly about firing up enthusiasm. My criticsism was not about not being specific enough in general. It was about how so often the speeches say things like, "And now I'm gonna tell you EXACTLY what I intened to do," and then in the next breath it's off to a joke or platitude without even pretending to follow up on the thing the told you they were going to talk about.

Palin is not the only one to do this, that's for sure. But I thought this piece in the Palin speech was a perfect example of that tactic. She knows we want to know what she did as mayor, so she says she is going to tell us. And then once she has our rapt attention, she just uses it as a slam at what Obama did before politics, and never tells us what she said she was going to tell us. Most people get caught up in the joke that they don't even know they have been bamboozled. I didn't even notice when I was watching. I just noticed it when rereading the text Kush posted.

The conventions have never been intended to hold speeches of substance. I didn't give the DNC too much crap over their speeches either. I'm waiting for October to come because that's when candidates really start to release more and more details of their intentions in specifics.

Conventions are made for "hype". Which is why I have a hard time getting into them or taking them seriously. I give both parties a free pass.. I consider this like their version of mardi gras. Just a bunch of mindless idiots gathering together to catch beads (feed their egos).

Now if only we could get some boobie action going.. that's a convention I'd be into :thumbsup:
