What is the recommended height for 1000watt light?

For a 1000watt light, would the height from the top of the plant be 18-24inches? Does it differ wether your in the veg. stage or the flowering stage as far as the height of the lamp goes?

Depends on what kind of reflector or hood your using ( standard, air cooled, or cooltube)

I will take it you are using a standard hood. A 1000w HPS is around 20 to 24 inches. One way to tell is hold the back of your hand to the light. Start low and continue up untill you feel the heat from the light. As soon as you feel the heat that is the point where you do not want the plants to pass or you will burn the topps of the plant.

Do yourself a favor and work with something air-coolable.
For veg, HPS is not the most efficient way to go.
If you are FLOWERING under 1k of HPS, you should be VEGGING under ~400w of MH or the flourescent equivalent. Otherwise you are wasting electricity.
