There is no best size for ebb and flow. It depends on how much light you have and the area you are trying to cover. In a 4 ft by 4ft area, running a 1000w light, you can go from anywhere from 10 to 30 plants. A lot depends on how big they are when they go into flowering. The smaller the plant at flowering, the more room you have for more plants.

Please remember they can more than double in size by harvest time

I'd say that it depends on the space your working in, and how big your gonna grow the plants. are they from seed or clones, do you want a sog or are you gonna try to grow trees. the bigger plant you wanna grow the bigger the pot size and the more space it will take up, in the room and in the tub. what are your specs

To get back to the question, 2gallon plastic pots with the top 2" cut off is the right size for the root mass of a plant that's ready to be picked. 2-3wk 24/7, topped. 8wks at 12/12. 4' plant at end, mass on top=mass under.

That size(2gal.) is for hydroton also.

Depends how long your elapsed time between clone rooting and flip to 12/12 is.
Pots can be as small as 4" deep style for a dense bed of single-cola plants rooted and flipped pretty much immediately, to a Weedhound-style crazy 20 gallon DWC lol.
I would not go much over Icabod's 2 gallon cut pots for ebb n flow because of the risk of root rot with a large root mass. That will give you plenty of space to veg 2-4 weeks and flower a healthy plant.
I veg only until I am certain that the clones are growing upwards, about a week after roots appear, and then flower in 5.5" deep square pots of hydroton packed close together in the table.

Do you keep a bed of hydroton underneath/around the square pots..? Don't the roots grow out of the square pots?
