I love Lewis Black! lol :hippy:

And yet, you'd think the American people would take this as an opportunity to finally vote for a 3rd party candidate (for me, preferrably libertarian), and actually open up the political process! But they haven't; instead I watched the Obama DNC speech a couple nights ago and saw alomst every woman there choking back tears.
Meanwhile McCain thinks the economy is in tip-top shape, that 'ol George got it all right, and amazingly BOTH candidates won't discuss the constitutional liberties stripped away by the Bush administration.

I have a despondant feeling that if a 3rd party can't even increase it's votes in times like these, America will be stuck in the system of the 2-headed dragon forever.

The problem with the 2 party system isn't necessarily the system itself, but rather that they are allowed to balloon to enormous sizes with virtually unlimited funds.

Limit the party size and give each party a budget they must abide by and I guarantee we would see a lot more get done, in addition to this younger parties with new ideas would be able to participate much more easily than before, allowing for their voices to be heard much more clearly than before. Give all parties equal seats and then no one has 'power'. They become representatives instead as our forefathers intended it.

The problem is that this would never happen. It would have to be voted on and we all know that no politicians are going to open up a door that may give opportunity for them to lose their power.. SIGH!!!

That's an interesting idea dailashi; one which makes me think you might be interested in looking into a form of government called "proportional representation". I studied it in political science alongside all the other voting systems, and have to say it was possibly my favorite. Actually I was against it initially, and voted against it when my province had a vote for it; but once I actually learned the full mechanics of all the systems, I realized it worked out a lot better than I thought. It doesn't result in equal representation per-se, but it does ensure that all parties recieve some representation and that a 52% majority cannot suppress the rights of a 48% minority (an example I'm pulling from Nevada pot-laws and their last vote on legalization).

And yet Republicans all over the place are blaming taxes, and the fact that there are restrictions on where oil companies can drill, for the high oil prices.

I've heard it said that it's best when the government is gridlocked like that; that way they can't screw up as much.

You know, if it was say, Hillary Clinton vs. John McCain, I'd almost certainly vote Libertarian. I did in 2004. But I really do believe that Obama represents a divergence from the typical Democrats vs. Republicans way of doing things. Even though Obama is part of the two-party system, he's a realist. I think he has the best chance to actually help fix a lot of what's wrong with our government, without throwing the country into disarray like a Libertarian would.

He worked his way through the Chicago political system....how is he a realist? If anything he's part of the problem that needs to be fixed.

    Have a good one!:s4:
