how far are you keeping the light? That light (floresnt ONLY) should be real close to your plants like two inches or a bit more. That will make the plants grow with nodes closer together. Also putting a slight breeze from a fan on them will also make them have stronger stalks. You can also do a thing called super cropping. Look that up in search here, i would think there would be directions on how to do that (not sure what age you start that). You can also use the long plants to good avantage by tying them down and do the LST (Low stress training, you can look that up here too).
Good luck to you....i'm sure ms. attic will be by shortly. She may have more ideas for you.
Please do not burn your plants by putting your HPS light two or three inches from them, i was only talking bout the floresent light being that close.

Yup, get your flouro close to the plants. Tall and skinny means stretching for light. Did you know also that HPS light, that appears very pink, actually signals the plant to stretch much more than MH light, whcih is more blue? So a lot of growers veg young plants under flourescents of the 'daylight' or 'cool white' type, and save the HPS for flower. IT's not BAD to veg under HPS, but adding blue light will help keep the plants short. What style flourescents are you using?

Along with what Stinky said, perhaps you should try topping your plant once you make the adjustments. Not too much, but it sounds like your plant is ready for a topping.

i dont know what lumens you have hitting those plants, but it is much cheaper to vedg with a Floresnt light. You got to have a lot of lumens tho, so you might want to check that out. I start my plants inside during the spring with a floresnt light.
good luck to you
