Can you imagine what would happen if he said religion was bad? No candidate for any office has enough political capital to pull that off and survive past the next election. Anyway, religion isn't a bad thing overall. The relative peace brought to Europe by Christianity enabled the renaissance and the industrial revolution. Many criminals become productive citizens after finding religion. And faith-based charities are responsible for a lot of the assistance and disaster relief in third-world countries.
It's like any other organization, except they operate very differently and actually do some good in the world, but greed finds its way into everything and can make good, bad.
