Reno teen starts house fire while trying to kill spiders

A teenager trying to kill spiders with fire Sunday afternoon accidentally set a fence and part of his home on Fire on Neil Road in Reno.

Reno Fire Battalion Chief Rik Kajans said one half of a duplex at 3665 Neil Road, where the 17-year-old boy lived, was moderately damaged and the backyard fence was destroyed.

Kajans said the fire burned through a wall and damaged a kitchen ceiling. The other duplex was not damaged, he said.

He said a fire engine from the Moana Lane station responded within four minutes of getting a call at 1:15 p.m.

The fire was put out within another four minutes, Kajan said.

Kajans said he doubts the teenager would be charged with any crime as the fire is being ruled accidental.

Officials were attempting to locate his mother or a family friend Sunday night. For now, he said the home is not inhabitable.
