You'll be fine as long as you know the code and the handshake

Nahh... it's good to do some research first, and I encourage you to check out shop reviews and suggestions all over the net. That way you can find places that look interesting or a cool sounding strain that you want to try.
BUT....
Be prepared to throw all that shit out of the window. It's a really easy city to get around, but you will most likely get lost 3 times per day :stoned:, which will take you off of your course.
As for what types to try? Don't worry too much about that. They have menus in the coffeeshops with all sorts of characteristics to make your decision. Everything from taste, high, price, etc. is described for you. Remember... these guys do this for a living! They are MORE than helpful when trying new things. Especially the hash, since (in my experience) many Americans know MUCH more about bud than hash. And you DO NOT want to miss out on the hash!!
I agree with the suggestions of the Reich and Van Gogh museums. Even if it is just to say you did something that didn't involve  (although... being high is a great way to enjoy the Van Gogh shit)
Oh, and mine was specifically a High Times cruise, but try to get on a smoke friendly canal boat. Soooooo sweeeet!!! It is a great way to relax and view the city. I highlight "smoke friendly," because you really have to respect the culture over there. Yes, Cannabis is tolerated and you will see police walk by while you puff off of a vaporizer/bong/joint and you WON'T be arrested. Although, this doesn't mean you can go anywhere and light up. Some restaurants will let you smoke respectfully... but ASK FIRST!
Lastly, I do recommend the Cannabis Cup for anyone that desires to experience it. I would not suggest that someone with limited money, or someone that isn't a full time, dedicated :rasta: do it. It can be very expensive when trying to judge ALL of the entries. Because yes, contrary to popular belief... if you have a judge's pass you DO have to buy the bud you judge. You will get free shit, and it is a very cool experience... but if I were to go again, it would simply be to enjoy the city. You don't have to be a High Times judge to have an amazing time in Amsterdam. Sometimes, since you are steering away from the "popular" shops (or basically the ones that are able to donate about a pound of bud and free souvenirs to enter the Cup) you are able to find those gems tucked back away from the tourists. Those are the REAL places to find.
