Is it "normal plain soil" from your backyard, (dirt) or are you talking about normal potting soil? I've always grown in pots, so...I use potting soil. It's weed-free, usually bug free, somewhat ph balanced, and most of the time, it's ready to use. When I do add stuff, it's limited to some worm castings, (1 tablespoon:gallon of pot size) and a little extra perlite, depending on the potting soil brand.

Backyard soil has bugs, bacteria, weeds, kids toys, lawn furniture... and needs shitloads of ammending.

Would stray away from adding composts and manures, at least till you get familiar with your crop, the soil, your nutrients. Once in, it can't be removed.
