PKK behind BCT oil pipeline blast

The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has claimed responsibility for an explosion on the Turkey's Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline.

On Tuesday, an explosion on Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline prompted the country's authorities to halt the flow of oil along the pipeline.

In a statement on PKK website, the insurgents claimed responsibility for the blast.

The closure of the pipeline after the explosion has boosted oil prices.

The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline (BTC) is a crude oil pipeline that covers 1,768 km (1,099 miles) from the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli oil field in the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.

It is the second longest oil pipeline in the world after the Russian Druzhba pipeline.

The PKK previously said it was behind an explosion on an Iranian-Turkish natural gas pipeline earlier this year. The attack halted gas exports from Iran to Turkey for five days.

The PKK has been fighting for autonomy in southeastern Turkey since 1984, conducting attacks on the country mostly from bases in northern Iraq. The violence has killed tens of thousands of people.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by a number of states including Turkey, the US, and the EU member states.
