New grower with questions on CFL grow

i always wanted to try growing a nice plant so i bought myself 3 pretty big CFL's from the store and started growing a plant in a box in my room.... after about a month i had to move the plant out of the box and into my closet because of size.... My plant is now about 7 weeks old from the seed and its a good 3 feet tall. I changed the light to 12/12 when i moved it to the closet.

    - iv heard someone say to turn the bulbs sideways, is it a good idea?

    - and the plant looks extremely healthy. theres already about 20 small buds on it that i can count and one larger one right on the top. im really worried the lights arent enough but the plant looks so healthy. help?? :rastasmoke:

So.... you want people to help you find out what is wrong with your extremely healthy plant? :wtf:

My guess... the only potential health risk is that its' owner is a hypochondriac You've got 20 bud sites and a swelling cola :stoned: Just chiiiiiiill maann :hippy:

Obviously, if ventilation isn't a problem and you can handle the added heat... Plant + More Light = More

And yes, from what I have heard... the majority of the CFL's output is projected through the sides and not the tip. I can not verify how much of a difference there is, but people say that there is one. The lights are so close to the plant (which yours should be :thumbsup that I doubt it makes or breaks a grow.

Oh yeah... take some pictures :smokin:

Congrats on a 3 foot monster using on CFL! And it is your first grow, yeah?:thumbsup::thumbsup:

How many lumens do you currently have on the plant? Most CFL packages will state lumen info. If not, you can look on the bulb to read the bulb's wattage. Most CFL output between 60-100 lumens per watt. Usually toward the lower end if you bought them at Wal-mart or a similar store.

Once we know have many lumens you have, we can talk about possibly more lighting.

Hopefully you have a thermometer? Likely, the additional lighting would probably outweigh the consequences of higher heat output. If this is low quality bagseed, it is likely of a more equatorial strain, sativa dominant and can tolerate higher temperatures. With that said, do not let the temp get over 95F or so for very long. Optimal is lower, 70-80F, but do the best you can and don't stress, you have done fine thus far.

CFLs do put out more light from the side, but it will definitely not make or break a grow. As Metal said, the lights should be close... Some people go as close as an inch or so, closest you can get without the plants showing signs of heat stress or burned tips. If you can comfortably place the back of your under the CFL, then the plant should be fine as well. I can never get mine closer than 2-3 inches, but it is fine. Light does degrade at an exponential rate though, closer the better.

You have towels or something under the closet door at night for 12/12 yes? Absolutely no light can enter.. Stapler, strips of cloth or black construction paper around edges, duck tape around seals or panda film or black ... Seal it all up, then stand in the closet. With the room light on, it should be pitch dark in the closet if you have done it correctly.

    Have an awesome grow bro!

    peace :rastasmoke:

i jus wanna say thnx for all the help so far, all the information was def very usefull....
the only thing i can find on the bulb is it says its 23 w and 120 vac?? like i said, i have 3 of them and their about an an inch from the top of the plant. i turned the bulbs sideways today and they def look like their doing better that way...

i was also wondering about the whole white paint/alluminum foil dispute. My closet is painted white but i put foil on the walls to reflect the light better and it looks like the bottom leaves are getting more light with the foil... should i keep it or jus go back to the white walls?

and one more question... what would be a good estimate of how much yield ill get off of my plant?? iv heard everything from an OZ to a pound, and i guess it depends on the size of the plant but im not sure.

and im also going to take pictures when i wake up so ill have them up very soon :rastasmoke:

Well thnx for all the help but its a F*CKING MALE..... ugh..... back to square one again.... iv read that if u mulch the male plant and put it in the dirt u used for the male grow, that it will somewhat help the next plant turn into a female?? ugh this is soooo disapointing.....

Although, when you mentioned that you had roughly 20 bud sites... and then after looking at the pics... I figured it was a male . Not that I could really make out the male clusters from the pic, but I didn't see any buds either.

Too bad... not sure about the mulching males though. StinkyAttic has a theory about planting two seeds close to each other in the same pot... and having decent results with one being a female. You just have to figure out what's what and get rid of the male a.s.a.p. so that it doesn't impede on the (potential) females roots system.

On a good note... it looks like you can take care of a plant so when you do get a female you should have a nice base knowledge to ensure a bountiful harvest.

    Stay positive and Keep

Would definitely like to hear Stinky's theory, I usually just hear her tell others 1 plant per pot.

The 2 seeds method works well, provided you do not let them veg too long; usually must flower around 8-12 inches so you can hurriedly find out sex and ditch the male or transplant one of the females if you are lucky. If they veg too long, competition and root tangling set in and that is no good.
