outdoor grow issue- fan leaves wither and die

this plant is about 2 meters tall at a little more than 3 months old. my buddy planted her indoors, grew her under a compact flurorescent light under 18:6 light until she was a little less than a foot tall, then he transplanted her about a month in. to the soil he added about 40 lbs of generic organic top soil, about 10 of 'moisture control' bag soil, and 2 or 3 pounds of a funky mix of peat and sphagnum moss, bone and blood meal, worm castings, composted cow and chicken manure, vermiculite, a bit of lime, a bit of wood ash, some 7-10-5 organic fertilizer, and for good measure, a dusting of some 17-23-6 commercial urea-derived fertilizer for garden vegetables. she gets watered pretty regularly with water from a nearby stagnant pond (reasonably clear, not nasty).

he dug in about 3 feet, then mixed that up pretty thoroughly with the on-site soil. the plant was transplanted to the site with 2 others, one of which was transplanted roughly to another site and became a hermaphrodite, and the other of which turned to a male which was transplanted elsewhere and is doing fine.

now this one is having a problem in which the fan leaves get red speckles and veins, then the tips yellow, curl under, and the leaves die.

what is going on, guys? we're living at about 35 degrees of latitude here if that helps at all for a frame of reference.

there's some leafhoppers on it but i don't think that's the issue. also see some of the nearby maple saplings and blackberry vines. :hippy:

I've been hearing it's a magnesium deficiency, anyone wanna throw something in there or is this too complicated? Lol. :wtf:

you might have too much nitrogen...it is advised that you use less nitrogen for flowering and urea based fertilizers contain nitrogen that needs to be broken down by the soil first before the plant can get at it.

What it sounds most like to me is that you have a potassium defficiency, common in plants that are way tall and a "K" defficiency cause dead spots and yellowing on leaves.

wow, and it ALSO looks to me, since your leaves are red, and small on your more recent pics, that you may have a phossphorus defficiency as well.

So yea, definitely you have too much nitrogen, and too little potassium and phosphorus

    That's your problem. Good luck

If you need help figuring out how to fix these just ask

lol, that's a blackbery vine wrapped around a maple sapling.

potassium and phosphorus it is, i'll go poke around at the local hardware store and see what they've got.

there's really not much of that urea fertilizer in there. maybe 2 -4 tablespoons in 40 gallons of soil?

    ha, good call then.

I must be tired if that's what that is

You can see where those leaves can be mixed up with underdeveloped Canna leaves though right?

    Save some of my dignity...

Just kidding, I hope that helped though!

Flush it for a week too with Ph'd water also, that will help clear things out too, somewhat at least, it is outdoors afterall

You're locked out with WAY too much fertilizer.
There's no practical way to flush a plant in the ground- next year, go easy on the ferts. Chicken manure AND bone meal AND urea! Wow, that's a lot of N.

Less is more. You can always give a liquid fertilizer later, but you cannot take away fertilizer you have already added. If the plant is on a hillside, you can try to direct rainwater to wash the surface of the soil, and dig a trench about 3 feet DOWN SLOPE from the plant that lets water from deeper under the plant run off, but even that isn't going to really help much.

no worries! why do you think it's planted where it is?

there honestly isn't that much of any one thing, especially the urea-based stuff, in the fertilizer mix that was used. and it's mixed pretty thoroughly in with the on-site soil (nasty hard clay stuff) and bag soil (topsoil with sand and ash).

i'll try to run as much pure water through it as i can though. thanks.
