Obama defends plans for direct talks with Iran
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama defended his proposal to negotiate with Iran Wednesday and said he would use "big sticks and big carrots" to persuade the country's leaders not to develop nuclear weapons.
"My whole goal in terms of having tough, serious direct diplomacy is not because I'm naive about the nature of any of these regimes. I'm not," Obama said at a press conference. "It is because if we show ourselves willing to talk and to offer carrots and sticks in order to deal with these pressing problems, and if Iran then rejects any overtures of that sort, it puts us in a stronger position to mobilize the international community to ratchet up the pressure on Iran."

Obama said his position has been consistent.
"I've said that with sufficient preparation I would be happy to meet leaders from other sovereign states including countries like Iran or North Korea or Venezuela," he said. "I have said that it is important to make sure that it begins with low-level diplomatic engagement and that there's a clear agenda so that any meetings would be constructive."

Well, we went from "direct talks with the leaders" with NO preconditions to "low level diplomatic engagements" to using "big sticks and big carrots". In other words....his rhetoric has traveled from the far left to the center moderates to the right wing. Imagine that with the general election at hand. Hell, Bush even backed a plan that maintained nuclear power for Iran as long as Russia handled the uranium enrichment. So what "big carrot" does he have in mind? Isn't the "big stick" what's already being done with sanctions or does he have even a bigger stick?
Anybody ever watch Transformers? Didn't know that one of the Decepticons was an Obama-con. Different face for every day of the week.Obamites...TRANSFORM!!

P4B, try to watch your slams, using transformers doesn't make your point any more cute. For someone that seems to dislike personal attacks, you sure make a lot of them.
epxroot, amen. Some people don't realize that both sides change their minds, and only see the other candidate's flaws.
It should be a given that both sides will flipflop, so while it is annoying, it is far from unexpected.
