Dallas City Council debate over newly found Blackhole discovered

I thought this was pretty hilarious. Even politics needs a rest for some humor on occassion. Even better if you can combine the two

Dallas County officials spar over 'black hole' comment

A special meeting about Dallas County traffic tickets turned tense and bizarre this afternoon.

County commissioners were discussing problems with the central collections office that is used to process traffic ticket payments and handle other paperwork normally done by the JP Courts.

Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections "has become a black hole" because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office.

Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud "Excuse me!" He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole."

That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy.

Mayfield shot back that it was a figure of speech and a science term. A black hole, according to Webster's, is perhaps "the invisible remains of a collapsed star, with an intense gravitational field from which neither light nor matter can escape."

Other county officials quickly interceded to break it up and get the meeting back on track. TV news cameras were rolling, after all.

These guys need to pull their heads out of their "holes," regardless of what color their particular "hole" is.

Here in the Dallas area, this sort of super-heightened political-racial sensitivity is always making the news. The commissioner named John Wylie Price mentioned in the piece above is always making a racial mountain out of a non-racial molehill. He loves publicity and loves to play the race card if it'll get him on the news!

One correction, Daihashi, to your heading. The folks involved aren't on the Dallas City Council. They're the Dallas County Commissioners. So they're the administrators/keepers of the county DA's office, the JP courts, and the county hospital system, among other things. The county hospital is Parkland, where I just finished up my first third-year med school rotation and am about to start my second in ob-gyn. The county commissioners are always saying the county hospital is a financial black hole, too, which it is. The Parkland/UT Southwestern system provides medical care not only to Dallas County residents and indigents but to a vast number of citizens from the county directly south of Texas. Last year the county commissioners sent a bill to Mexico for nearly $6 million to try and recover some of the health care expenses Parkland and the county picked up for its citizens!
