unless you have a specific reason to NEED to trim the top, why not just grow your first plant out, learning as you go ? ... your first grows are likely to give you fits (you may kill it with ignorance and over-love ) .. if that doesn't make sense, you will understand soon enough ... if you just 'let it grow' normally, it will be a lot easier to diagnose problems ... postpone the optional techniques until you grow successfully ... and, don't get discouraged  ... just leave it the hell alone, try to let nature care for it (she has done real well for thousands of years, without our help) ... use the K.I.S.S. method for best results: (Keep It Simple, Stupid)

    That should help.

Just saw Reaper's post... Very true! Both are effective techniques IF you are trying to achieve the results they offer. It seems like many beginners go straight into things like LST, SCROG, SOG, FIM, TOP, and every other training or cropping method that has an acronym, without mastering the basic grow cycle first. Either way, that link to the FAQ has a really easy to follow tutorial. Have fun!

    Stay and Keep

If you think pinching is the way to grow in your space, you can start pinching or fimming after the 5th node.
Don't forget that the plants finish 2-3x the height they were when you initiated flower, so give yourself plenty of room!
