Steely Dan is not the name of a band member. He was a steam-powered dildo from the book Naked Lunch. And if you go into their discography, you find a LOT of other very odd and obtuse references. The best part of being a Steely Dan fan (the band, not the dildo) is finding these references, because nearly every song has a hidden meaning.

Marshall Tucker was the name of the guy (a piano technician) whose name was on the key to the practice space that the band of that name used.

Jethro Tull invented a seeding device that revolutionized English agriculture. Why a band would use that as a name is beyond me.
stinkyattic Reviewed by stinkyattic on . True meanings I get the reaction "Uh I didn't really need to know that" when I explain to people the meaning of song titles and group names. I got it when I told a friend the meaning of Turning Japanese by the Vapors (it's about spanking the monkey) and I also got a similar reaction when I told someone what "Scissor Sisters" means. Do you folks know of any ? Rating: 5
