Try not to harvest too early. Yield will suffer. When most of the trichomes turn milky you'll likely want to start thinking of harvesting. If you let them go past the milky stage, they start turning amber or rust colored.
Radio Shack has a tiny 100x pocket microscope for around $10.00 or so. Works great.
As a general rule,
milky trichomes - a lighter "up" buzz
rusty trichomes - a heavier "I've fallen and can't reach my munchies" buzz.

Like Rusty said, its not a good indicator by hair
but if you absolutely don't want to get a microscope you can do it when 80-95% of the hairs are red/orange/brown
