I agree that it must have been her seemingly creative way of making a political statement. Backfired, though, didn't it?

Illinillinois, I'm thrilled you posted this thread and shared your feelings. I tweaked your title a little so it wasn't quite so edgy toward people who may not share your sympathies about this world and our country being one earth, one people, one purpose. I'm not sure if you're old enough yet to realize this, and in order to do so you may need to have spent some time in parts of America where there still are very strongly divided racial lines. But believe it or not, for many people of color--far far too many, to be honest--we still are two very different cultures--black and non-black. (This is the way they see it, at least. And in their world, it is that way because there are very marked differences in way of life, education, income, etc.)

Is it ideal? No. It'd be lovely if they all saw us as one earth, one people, one culture, too, as you do. I think it's marvelous that you feel that unity! Increasingly the younger generations do--or will see us that way, too. I just want to remind you to step outside your own perspective for a moment and put yourself in the shoes of someone who may not have had the same advantages and education you have, and I suspect you'd real quickly see that, for plenty of groups, particularly the poor and racially diverse, we've not yet arrived at that unified ideal.

Just something to ponder . . . and why, from her perspective, perhaps, that anthem might have meant more to her than "The Star Spangled Banner." Obviously, she still pulled a fast one and was trying to sorta in-your-face to our official national anthem. I just suspect there was more to her motivation and her feelings of being separate than you might have realized.

When it came time to sing it, she pulled a bait and switch and sang the BLACK NATIONAL ANTHEM, WTF !!!!!!!!
