Well he wasn't so much a "wise" man, but a "high" man. Come to think of it, he talked too much.
As usual, it boils down to control, money, politics, fear and racism. People are afraid of what they don't understand. Through prohibition, the American public has been limited access to materials that would allow for independant research on the harm and benefit the cannabis plant has on the human body. Unfortunately, much of the information that many people still go by, is long disproven propaganda and misinformation. The average non-smoker does not seek out correct information and, combined with no personal experience, they make assumptions, stereotype and visualize a loser. It does not help that many proclaimed marijuana advocates (doctors included) can not publicly support research and responsible use due to its legal status, for fear that they may become a target for law enforcement or possibly losing their medical position. People choose not to fight the good fight, because the average smoker does not WANT a fight. They want to live their life in peace, not having to worry simply because a "cure all" (illegal) wonder plant happens to bring them some relief from the aches and pains of this world. You will notice that many anti-marijuana advocates will smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol, all the while, gritting their teeth at the thought of someone lighting up a joint after work. They just don't understand... they really don't. We can do our best to educate the public through honest testimonial and responsible use, and hope that our voices are heard. In the mean time
Stay and Keep

Oh yeah... it does wonders for a hangover too.
