That's a good guideline to start with.
Then, if your plant is really bushy, give it some more space. So a 18" plant with one main stem might be happy in a 1-2 gallon pot, but a plant of the same height, with 4-6 main leads, would definitely benefit from a 3 gallon pot.
Remember to put the plant in the smallest next size up that makes sense. So go from a party cup to a 1 gallon pot, not from a party cup to a 5 gallon pail. Remember when you were a kid and your mom would say, get your sneakers a little big because you will grow into them? And then they fit funny and by the time your feet fit them, they're all fucked up anyway. Some kinda idea.

    Thank you Stinky
This is for a little lady you helped me with a while back. I did everything you suggested except transplant. It was in a 2 gal pot and not very big. Well thanks to your knowledge, she finally started growing. Now she is getting the upside down canoe leaves and I know it is not ph cause now I am a fanatic about that. So after lots of research I thought she might be getting rootbound. She's sleeping right now so I will measure her when she wakes up. She pretty much goes straight up, very sativa. The next size up I have is a 5 gal bucket. It seems like moma would of not put my feet in shoes that much bigger, but maybe in this case it could be O.K.?

2 gallons to 5 gallons is fine, especially if you are already seeing canoe leaves. That means rootbound! You got it.

Do you plan to flower her right away, or is she already in flower? Sats take a long time and get big, so unless you want to start shopping for 10 gallon tubs pretty soon, you might want to think about putting her in the 12/12!
