NC: Legalizing Medical Marijuana
(RALEIGH) -- A former U.S. Surgeon General was in Raleigh supporting the proposal to allow use of marijuana for medical purposes. The House bill would create a legislative commission study of the benefits of marijuana use by patients with various ailments. Some states do allow it.
Former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders spoke to a House committee discussion of the idea. She said people shouldnâ??t fear it would encourage young people to use marijuana because they donâ??t go after morphine, though it is used for medical purposes. A representative of the Christian Action League didnâ??t want to see the use legalized and said public policy shouldnâ??t be based on the benefits of a few.
