How much lighting would be sufficient for 4 plants? Also, which kind of lighting should I use that would be most cost efficient? Thanks!

6 CFL's.

Read a few pages in the FAQ's and the lighting section to help you further. I am sure there are others with similar needs that have asked this same question.

See, there are a lot of variables that will come into play like:
Size of space
Location
Temperatures
Experience
Expected results
Materials on hand...

etc.
