if i understand your question you must mean in the cloner.
what that is is a piece of pipe wrap insulation cut to 1 inch and then just wrapped around the stem of a cutting and then wedged into the top of my cloner.

here is a picture to illustrate, on the right is the cloner with the pipe wrapped clones, on the left is a DWC i was using as a cloner for some cuttings that i had no room for in the cloner, they're the ones in the orange cups, in that same DWC there are 2 cuttings that had already rooted and were transplanted into DIY net pots filled with hydroton.

LOL, shit, that's what you mean, those little balls are expanded clay pellets which are called hydroton, they provide a substrate for the roots to hang onto as well as retaining moisture and oxy.
