Bending like a MoFo... the limbo scene from the Titanic spoof episode of Futurama comes to mind. Steel drum music optional.
Chemical... Bushmaster is the one. Not all strains respond, and it is expensive.
Scissorhands... Uh huh. Don't take off more than 1/3 of the total plant mass at any given time, and allow 2 weeks to recover before flowering.
IMVHO, bending is your best bet.

Stretch Stop works great. I used it once and my plants only stretched 50%. It also speeds up early flowering. I can't comment on other brands that do this but it worked for me. I vegged them longer just to test it and thinking it would increase yield due to longer vegging and more root mass. But the yield was the same. However it's perfect for your situation.

If you are going to prune a lot off the plant give the plant a root stimulator 3 days before you chop to eliminate most of the shock. As always, like Stinky says, never go more than 1/3 of the plant. If you don't have a root stim use a form of sweetener (sweet, diamond nector, carb load, or molassass). Good Luck!

If you can't get to a shop then I would trim them back, give them a week or 10 days to recover and then flower.

I've got another couple techniques for ya:
-Reduce the 'swing' between night and day temps so that they are almost identical
-During the first 3 weeks of flower, use BLUE light (halide, daylight flouros, whatever) instead of RED light. Then, when the stretch period is over, go back to HPS to finish. This will make them stretch a LOT less.

Absolutely Stinky. As a matter of fact I used my MH's for the first 10 days of 12/12 this last cycle and it did reduce stretch. I also received a dual arc light from my local hydro shop to try next time. It's 600watts hps and 400 mh. While I'm looking forward to evaluating it I don't really expect it to make a difference, except maybe reducing stretch. But if it does I'll let you know.
