cheap and easy DIY cloner and what to do with the results

So after reading this thread almost a year ago I finally am making a cloner for myself. I bought a big bag of Root Riot plugs last OCT08 and trying to use them up first, but that ain't going to happen cause I am not happy with the results I was getting. Thanks again for such a user friendly thread!

Amazing, exactly what I was looking for! I have tried something similarly cheap, but apparently I used just the wrong products. hah! Time to make this one, I hate these rockwool plugs.

hello folks, sorry i've not been around for a while but life has a way of
    getting in the way sometimes.

anyway, i figured i'd post an update here in the interests of full disclosure
as i am no longer using my bubble cloner.

i switched to a simple wick-style cloner that i found on another forum that
i like better because it is simpler and cheaper while still giving me nearly a
    100% success rate.

here are a few pics of a run that i let go for 17 days, just because i wanted
to slow them down some, what i mean is that i left them in for several days
longer than they needed to be left.

...and here is a link to the original thread.

odd you posted on here today.

I bought the air pump, hose, air stones and superthrive today. Plus visited 3 Home depots, two Lowes and one Walmart before coming home to do a web search for the black tub.

I planned to post that the container store now has them, but otherwise none of the others.

Either way, still a great thread.

justanotherbozo, thanks for posting this information, it was exactly what I was looking for! I just built my system tonight, but instead of pipe insulation, I used one of those foam pool noodles as material. They sell them at the dollar store and make excellent plugs, and you get like, 8 feet of it for 1 buck :-)
Quick question for you or anyone who has used this system: I'm using a DWC right now and will be taking clones soon. The mother is a clone I obtained that was already rooted in rockwool. My question is, once my new clones grow roots using justanotherbozo's inatructions, do I then place the rooted clones inside a rockwool cube and then place in the hydroton/netpot? I can't figure out how the plant supports itself without being rooted inside a medium, and seeing the size of of some of those roots in the pics, I can't figure out how those long roots fit inside the rockwool.

I built something similar to this about 3 months ago and damn it if I am not having nasty problems. I have the exact same tub even, did you get at container store? At any rate I think what the problem is that my cups (I use 2" netcups and star collars) don't sit on the lid correctly and leave pin holes. Notice how the lid undulates up and down in channels? You will find that once the holes are cut, you wont have a clean surface for the netcup lid to sit on and as such pin holes and slits are left behind. I have plenty of panda film and created a nice sheet to lay over the lid before inserting the cups, but that doesn't seem to work all that well either. I orginally tried DWC in this system and was able to get some clones rooted and into my system but I had to cut their stay short for fear of algae. I was having to clean the system every 3 days.

The second I filled the cups with coco. I watered once a day with a timer and let the bubbler go for 15 minutes. Total failure. Coco cant handle that much water. Then I emptied the cups filled with half coco and hydroton and failed again. Coco again can not handle that much water. I have a 3 head disk fogger which worked pretty well as I recall when I attempted to grow in fog when I first started growing in general. I learned that mature plants aren't easily grown in fog but clones are I found. I recall vividly how quickly those plants started to sprout. Hopefully I can find a way to make this little box work with a fogger now.

Please forgive the ugliness of my closet. That area has been flooded before and caused water damage to the baseboards and what not. Too broke to fix it all.
