Al Gore's electricity bill goes through the (insulated) roof
I do find his massive energy usage really hypocritical considering what he has taken up as his main cause, but the actual fact that his energy went up doesn't mean that his changes didn't work.. it just means that the friggin idiot went and started using more electricity.
My electric bill changed from month to month. Here's an example on a less grand scale than Gores:
I replaced all the lighting in my house with CFLs. Being the moron I am.. I was always conscious of the fact that I had replaced my bulbs.. and as such I did not really reach to turn them off right away as I did with my standard incandescent bulbs. The result.. my bill was about $15-20 higher the next month from leaving lights on.
Yes I did take measures to save power, but it was my own stupidity that made the bill go up.
So for all people that are looking to go green or save money/energy... don't let this article deter you from making some changes.
For all those people that looked up to gore and thought he was great for what he was trying to do for the enviorment.. please take a gander and look at what an idiot the guy is. Actually I can't call him an idiot as I'm sure he is intelligent. We'll just say that he lacks common sense/goes against his own goals and it has proven itself here.daihashi Reviewed by daihashi on . Al Gore's electricity bill goes through the (insulated) roof Environment campaigner Al Gore is using more electricity than ever despite pledging to cut consumption more than a year ago, a libertarian research group claims. According to the Tennessee Centre for Policy Research, the annual electricity usage at the former US Vice President's large home in Nashville has risen by 10 per cent. Mr Gore's environmental activism inspired the Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth. But the TCPR branded him a "hypocrite" in February 2007 after Rating: 5

I believe the hypocrisy is that he's using 17,768KWh a month and is raving about how we need to make changes to improve the enviornment. Yet here he is using nearly twenty thousand kwh a month when the average american household is using 11k a year.

Seems Mr. Gore needs to take some more of his own advice.

I despise hypocrisy. So if Al is not living up to his ideals, it is despicable considering how much he pushes it. But I'm with Gandalf on this --- it doesn't stand to reason, and there's no good way to verify it.
Also as Daihashi pointed out, often people who take one kind of energy-saving measure end up feeling like maybe they have saved enough not to have to conserve in other ways, so they end up using MORE energy. It's actually very common, and his example of installing CFLs, then giving up turning off the lights is one that comes up a lot.
However, somehow I don't see Al installing all this energy-saving equipment and then having a net gain in power purchased from the utility. Maybe the figure reflects his gross power usage, but not his net pull from the grid. For example, a person who installed enough solar panels to cover 90% of their electricity purchased from the grid might be justified in letting their gross power consumption go up 10% --- maybe run the air conditioner more than they used to, because the electricity is almost all being made for free. They use 10% more than they used to total, but they are only pulling 20% of what they used to from the grid. The article desn't say whether it is gross or net.
And another factor could be the power used to actually do the retrofit of the house. I had a kitchen remodeled, and my power use went throught the roof during the couple of months it took to finish because of the doors left open all day and the holes in the house.

LOL, heck man, he's probably just running the lights night and day trying to invent the outernet, lol, he already invented the internet
seriously though folks, Al Gore is a nitwit, plain and simple (hell, that works too, lol, the simple part anyway)
maybe we should all vote for Al Gore for president with Dan Quayle as his VP, maybe between them, they can find a clue

Oh my god.. there's a name from the past I had long forgotten. Dan Quayle. I was about 9 years old when this guy took office and I knew he was an idiot then. Pretty bad when you're 9 and you can tell that the Vice President is a nimrod.

This part of your post sold me right here. I had completely forgotten tying into the grid and reselling your power back to the company. I'd be interested in knowing if that 17-18k figure was his adjusted/corrected power usage or just his overall.

LONG LIVE GORE.

Perhaps ManBearPig is going around Gore's house turning on all the lights and cranking up the thermostat.

LOL, i just looked up 'ManBearPig', ROTFLMAO, what a fucking maroon. here is the first paragraph from wikipedia
'Al Gore visits South Park Elementary School and talks about the terrible ManBearPig, who roams the Earth and attacks humans. According to Al Gore, ManBearPig is "half man, half bear, half pig." After the boys' basketball game is interrupted by another visit from Al Gore, who is disguised (poorly) as the ManBearPig and claims to be "Trying to spread ManBearPig awareness". Suddenly, Stan's father, Randy picks up the boys to drive them home. Randy says the former U.S. Vice President is just desperate for attention, because he has no friends. Al Gore then phones Stan in the morning when it is still dark and begins pestering him. Gore then breaks down on the phone, and Stan reluctantly agrees to go to a meeting, where Al Gore tells Stan and his friends that ManBearPig is hiding in the Cave of the Winds. At first the children are reluctant to go with him, but when he explains that he will excuse the children from school, they agree to go. During the course of this episode, Al Gore repeatedly states, "Manbearpig must be stopped!" as well as the phrase, "Excelthior!" (after "Excelsior!") and, "I'm Cereal!" (meaning "serious;" see Cultural References below.).'
lol, lol, lol what a putz, he can't even stop being a fool when talking to little kids! (man, this shit is sad 'cause you almost believe it, lol)
anyway, here's a pic of Al and his mom with some of his sibs, lol
