Obama: I can redraw the political map

No one who has been following Barack Obama's upstart path to the Democratic presidential nomination should be surprised at his campaign's claim that he does not need to win Florida and Ohio to have a chance at winning it all in November. Obama has been pursuing an ambitious national strategy from the start.

"I'm probably the only candidate who, having won the nomination, can actually redraw the political map," Obama replied to a question about his strategy from a Concord, N.H., woman at a house party last August. Pacing around the old Victorian home, the wooden floor creaking, Obama went on: "I'll give you one specific example: Mississippi is 40% African American, but it votes 25% African American. If we just got the African Americans in Mississippi to vote their percentage, Mississippi is suddenly a Democratic state. And Georgia may be a Democratic state. Even South Carolina starts being in play. And I guarantee you African-American turnout, if I'm the nominee, goes up 30% around the country, minimum."
Can Georgia Be Obama's Ohio? - Yahoo! News

I find this absolutely appaulling for a Presidential candidate to state. They accused B. Clinton of playing the race card? DAMN....well I guess if McCain could get the entire white population of the south to vote, these states would go republican? What if McCain were to state such an ignorant thing?

I find politics and elections interesting and amusing but this type of comment coming from EITHER SIDE is disgusting! I'm personally a HUGE fan of Colin Powell and IF he were to run for office, I seriously believe that he has enough class not to make such a statement. This race should be based on issues....NOT the color of your skin. To assume that you locked a vote because of being a certain race is racist is my eyes!

I'd LOVE to see McCain get 40% of the black vote just to prove to this asshole that the U.S. is beyond this sort of racism. We are all equal and we are all intelligent enough to vote on the issues alone!

I hope he does get a lot more blacks to register and start voting. They can have a bigger say in how this country is run. Nothing wrong with that. Its there country as much as us honkies.

The sad thing is though that we aren't. Blacks are always talking about injustices and tehre are still some prejudices on the other side. It creates a never ending clash; if everyone would realize that we're on the same side then we really could move beyond this petty race game but the fact of the matter is that we are not.

I can't say I blame Obama playing the race card. For years it's been White Nominees. I can't fault Obama for trying to win his race over in order to try to win the election, although I have to say I'd rather he won on his policies rather than something like this.

I hold the same standards to McCain also or any political figure that is running for any office.

why is it STILL about black and white?...black people are gonna vote for obama without knowing ANY of his political stances. The race card as he is using it is strictly black people to vote on a black guy...
and i respect your opinion hazetwostep...but what do you see every day? Id love to know. How about a well qualified white guy wont get a job over an underqualified black guy because the company needs more black people....thats what i see happening...

nayway, I know I am gonna get called a racist Im sure, but rest assured, I am not. Everyone should be equal....period...no way to cut it....black, white, gay, transvestite, emo...(lol, had to throw that in from the other thread)

I didnt hear obama once say he wanted to go talk to these unvoting blacks to let them know what he is about...no he is just counting on blacks to vote black......

    let the lashing begin....

SNS, I lived and grew up in a predominantly poor black neighborhood. There is some resentment that is hold towards Caucasians. Hell, if you even look remotely white but you're not then you come across prejudice. I've come across it and I'm not even white and what was odd they apologized when I told them I'm actually half Iranian/Half Hispanic.

Point being that there is resentment within the black community. I'm not sure how much or how wide spread but it does exist. Unfortunatley it plays out like two people bickering over something that doesn't even matter. Black holds resentment, so some other races hold resentment back.. then even more resentment is cast. It's a stupid retarded cycle.

Personally I don't understand it but I see it. Even today I live in a nice area of town, but due to the way our city is built I still get to walk through other areas that are very similar to where I grew up. Even having not lived in these areas for 10-15 years I still see the same resentments on both sides.

Not as much on the white side but to be fair, and some people will view this as a cop out, white people didn't have to go through hundres of years of slavery and oppression. This is something that no one will be able to completely understand I think except the Black community.

You used a business example but I feel the issue is more on a personal level. Racism still exists whether we like it or not. Personally I'm really disappointed that even in 2008 we can't move beyond color.

We are getting better year after year but I am astonished at how much the progression has slowed down.

Time to make my trek from my upper middle class condo and into the hood. I'm bored and want to smoke some herb with my black/white/mexican homies (yes I'm being serious and not facetious) where they're bound to call me Cracker or honky just because they know it gets a rise out of me since I'm not.. All in good fun lol

Word, Daihashi. There's still lots more division in voter turnout than there ought to be. It's sad but true. Twenty-three percent of respondents today in an ABC News/Washington Post poll said race is gong to make a difference in this election decision. It's probably much much more, but we won't know the truth about that till after the election.

Not sure why this was brought up now on something Obama said nearly a year ago 'cause there's no story to it other than an attempted spin. He was simply saying he'll get more black voters out. That's true, and I hope he does, too. Black voters have historically been under-represented in elections. I assume because they've not felt much connection to the historically white candidates. If McCain were to say that about whites, it wouldn't be any more or less racist (or un-racist) or any more of a story with which to cast him in a negative light. It'd just be him saying he could get more of his constituency out. Except that in McCain's case, his constituency, which looks like me, middle-aged and white, has always been the demographic that votes more than anyone else.

Dont get me wrong either...i wish more blacks, as well as everyone would vote more...And he might get them too...But more so because he is black than because of his views...thats all I am saying...its becoming a reverse racism country.....it is truely politically correct to not like white people....BET makes fun of whites all day...and ted danson gets ostracized for his jokes....eh, it will never go away...people will always be racist...And I am of jewish decent, but dont blame what happened before my lifetime on the problems i have now....yes they went through slavery, but they werent the only ones......and it was how long ago anyway???
again, I am not racist, i just believe in every man in himself....I am whiskey, not a white boy, cracker, metal head, stoner.........just whiskey....BONG

Yes, I don't think he was saying blacks would vote for HIM because he is black. He was saying they would turn out to vote. If 40% of the population only usually casts 25% of the votes, then they are a demographic who is not turning out to cast votes. If he can get the black demographic to turn out in proportionate numbers, and they lean Democratic, then it may swing some states Democratic. It'll be intereting to see if having a black man in the race changes the participation of black voters. I would not be surprised if it did.

"I'm probably the only candidate who, having won the nomination, can actually redraw the political map,"

Lets get real here for a moment.......WHY would he be "the only" candidate to accomplish this? :wtf:

Ya know, if McCain or others from the right shit on the road I wouldn't be trying to state what a beautiful batch of roses that'll produce. Bush shit on the road with torture, not to mention other acts, and it stinks!

This guy come from a radical church that had a preacher that talked this sort of trash...his spiritual mentor if I recall. But it's all just spin...the good Rev. Wright and Rev. Pfleger preach nothing but love and unity right? This is just an example of where this dudes head is really at and it's disgusting; OUR leaders should at least be beyond this sort of trash.

    Have a good one!:s4:
