Not sure if we have the 'snot-sponge' thing up here, but I bought a solution of a targeted bacterium called Vectabac, which is supposed to be the only thing that will kill off their eggs in the soil. Have been using it for a week, with some good results, tho covering the soil is another good way to interrupt their life cycle... and helps with reducing evaporation!

Also, you can make sticky traps outta good ole Duct Tape, and put'em on the rims/edges of your pots... they won't look like they're working at first (the /odd/ bug will seem to be able to cross 'em), but peel 'em up 2wks later, and look at alla bugz caught underneath

I have also heard of people using diatomaceous earth on the top of their soil (kind of like a clay that is razor-sharp at a microscopic level, which cuts them up as they crawl across it), but I am having a hard time finding some up here in TO.

Besta luck killin' the bugZ.
