Okay, have absolutely no idea what to do.

DH obviously has friends that grow as last night he brings home a plant - says to help me with my illnesses. Okay, nice gift but the plant came with a broken top (cut it back to where it joins at the next lower down leaves, cut down stem and put in a mix medium of water/dirt and some minerals - I didn't/don't have anything for root system so this is a standby (potassium/calcium and some ground herbs.)

Now what to do - the pot is black maybe 3 gallon, has what looks like gnats, very moist (not dripping but damp) and the leaves are pale green with a sort of yellowish overlay. Have sitting in spare room under regular overhead light and turned on ceiling fan, mixed in some potassium/crushed herbs/calcium) to dry out the dirt.

Where do I go from here (sure I need to repot, and get growth medium for the cut down crown) - is it salvagable or should I just thank DH and throw it out?

*edit to add* - I did take a tine and open the soil up so it's loose and airy
