This Damn Heat Wave... (and my potting mix also)

I've got 8 babies outside right now... a few afghans, and the rest a mix of various strains. We have been having 100 degree temps and 50% humidity for the last week or so. Any advice on what do do with outdoor plants in this weather?

The Afghans seem to be taking it the worst; which seems odd. Some of their leaves have yellowed a bit, and seem to be curling upward a bit as well... actually growing upward more then curling upward.

I had them in a spot that got like 6-7 hours of direct sunlight each day. When I noticed the slight problems I moved them to a more shaded spot that got light through the leaves of a taller bush. They started looking worse, so now I have them where they are getting 4-5 hours of direct light a day.

I'm just trying to keep them well watered and hoping the weather cools down soon.

Also, they are in Fafard Professional Potting Mix in 8 oz. cups with drainage holes. They are only between 2 and 4 inches tall right now.

Here is a link to the mix, in case you have any criticisms. This is only my second grow, and I've never had a female... so I'm open to advice. Fafard Professional Potting Mix - 8 QT at Merrifield Garden Center

I plan on putting them in bigger pots sometime in the next week or so, so if you have any recommendations for changing the soil I would appreciate it.

That farford is good but it is really light when you transplant you should get some of the farford Humus and mix it in the potting Mix already has perlite in it. Your Plants must be frying out really quick? You should be watering them probably 2-3 times per day in direct Sunlight. It's nothing major it can definitely be cleaned up. Wait they are still pretty small. When they get to be a foot or better if you plan on staying in pots mix in the humus and go into 3 gal buckets.

I would just stick them in the ground. I've been having roughly the same temp/humidity here. I have my plants in the ground and they're doing just fine as long as the soil is NOT bone dry.

mound up dirt and debris around your pots, should help insulate them and they should retain water for a tad longer???

Thanks friends. I'm going to go ahead and get them out of the cups and into some slightly bigger pots and put some mulch around the top to help keep the moisture in. Thankfully it looks like today marks the end of this latest heat wave.

The garden supply center near my didn't have that Humus. Think Lowes or Walmart would have it? Also, in a few weeks I'll start fertilizing. I've heard something with a high nitrogen is good, or at least 20-20-20 should be fine. I'd like something I can mix in the water. The garden supply center didn't have any of that either (nothing to mix into the water). I don't know what is up with that place. Are there any big "common" stores that you know carry something good? I don't really want to mail order marijuana specific fert.

Cannabis is a "weed". A general all purpose fertilizer would do.

Go buy some bone and blood meal. Worm manure, Composted/aged cow manure, black strap molasses and maybe a pinch of epsom salt. Organic stuff

Read and learn basic gardening, try growing other stuff other than cannabis, like make yourself an herb/veggie garden. :rastasmoke:

MULCH DUDE WTF YOU TALKING ABOUT?

Just use regular soil your using to light of a potting mix. It's not probably to light for the size of your plants chill out read some more and use good judgment. I think everyone agrees mulch is for your garden not your pot plant.

    Good Luck GL420:jointsmile::jointsmile::jointsmile:

mulch is for covering up bare spots in your garden to prevent weed growth and retain moisture --- or for vermicomposting and/or compost piles.

The guy at the first garden shop I went to told me to put mulch around the top of the plant to keep the moisture in. He asked me what I was growing... I told him I was growing tomatoes... LOL, so maybe that's why.

Anyway, I found a great hydroponics garden supply in the next town over which is where I'm going from now on. It's staffed by a bunch of hippies. They didn't even ask me what I was growing... they knew not to. They were just like, "So you're looking for strong vegetative growth right now, and then really big flowers come autumn, right?"

Anyway, I bought some "Fox Farm Peace-of-Mind" all purpose organic fertilizer. It is granules.

    Link: All-Purpose Fertilizer

I'll probably just re-pot the plants tomorrow in a bigger pot with a little of that (probably just a tsp. for each half gallon pot), and put a few granules on top. I'll work some into the top of the soil every few weeks or so. Then, at flowering, I'll kick in some bat guano to boost the buds. Sound good?

I've heard that cannabis doesn't require the "full strength" most fertilizer directions give. So I'm wondering if I should half the directions for this Fox Farm stuff. However, it almost seems like this stuff was made for cannabis growers. It is 5-5-5, and the package is a little "trippy" looking and shit.

Again, I appreciate everyone's advice, it gives me peace of mind to run this by experienced growers. (no pun intended)

P.S. I would grow some other vegetables as well, but I don't have any land. I'm growing my weed in some God-forsaken swamp outside of town, and I'd hate to get busted because my tomatoes caught Leo's eye as he was flying over. Lord knows once I own property I'll grow my own veggies though.
