4 days is not too long to wait, lol
it takes about 6 - 8 days, by then you should see definate roots
do the cuttings look otherwise healthy? no wilting?
are they getting wet underneath?
if so then just relax and give them a few more days, and i get that brownish discoloration also, don't worry, i get like 98% rooted clones

that's called scarification, think scraping the paint off the bottom inch of a pencil, obviously you should be more gentle with your cuttings than a pencil, just lightly scrape the stem, and go around the stem, you don't want to be manic about it, just enough so the water penetrates the stem easily
and i don't know if it's needed exactly, i just know i do it and it seems to help
