I wasn't really very politically aware when Nancy was first lady, but mostly I remember her getting flack for the things she did. Like I remember her getting a bunch of crap from people my age for her "Just Say No" campaign --- seemed like a pretty simpleminded bunch of bullshit, and since it was her promoting it, it was fair game to go after her. And I remember her taking some heat for consulting an astrologer and rearranging "Ronnie's" schedule for dates with more auspicious stellar alignments, and recommending white house staffing changes based on astrological predictions. If you are using your supersticious voodoo to affect the buisness of government, then I think you might be due a little hazing about that. Other than those two things I don't remmember her taking too much criticism, but I was young enough to not care that much about whether she was treated unfairly or not. And I didn't really like her much myself, so I probably would have thought it was funny at the time. But if there were other unfair attacks on her that were not related to the ways that she put herself in the public eye, then those were not right.

If a person puts themselves out there as a public figure, then they should be able to take criticism related to their actions, as long as it is fair. So Nancy should have been able to take criticism, based on her public actions. Hillary faced fair criticism as first lady for her involvement with her healthcare initiative.

IF Michelle Obama really did make "whitey" references in public a public speech, then she deserves fair criticism for that, but I highly doubt that it is true. It looks more like a rumor campaign to me --- right-wing hatchet-job bullshit. A way to get at her husband by attacking her. And I think that tactic is more of a right-wing thing than a left-wing thing. Karl Rove definitely favored this tactic, and the article even mentiond him as being invloved with this rumor.

The Valerie Plame leak was definitely an unfair and uncalled for right-wing attack on a man's wife for political reasons. That is about as sleazy as it gets.

What's on the Michelle Obama Rant Tape?

Here's what's known so far:

The Michelle Obama Rant Tape was filmed between June 26th - July 1st 2004 in Chicago, IL at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Conference at Trinity United Church: specifically the Women's Event.

Michelle Obama appeared as a panelist alongside Mrs. Khadijah Farrakhan and Mrs. James Meeks.

Bill Clinton spoke during the Conference, as did Bill Cosby and other speakers, but not at the panel Michelle attended.

Michelle Obama spoke at the Women's Event, but referenced Bill Clinton in her rant --- his presence at the conference was the impetus for her raving, it seems.

For about 30 minutes, Michelle Obama launched into a rant about the evils of America, and how America is to blame for the problems of Africa. Michelle personally blamed President Clinton for the deaths of millions of Africans and said America is responsible for the genocide of the Tutsis and other ethnic groups. She then launched into an attack on "whitey", and talked about solutions to black on black crime in the realm of diverting those actions onto white America. Her rant was fueled by the crowd: they reacted strongly to what she said, so she got more passionate and enraged, and that's when she completely loses it and says things that have made the mouths drop of everyone who's seen this.

The "tape" is a DVD that Trinity United sold on its website, and possibly offered free for download up until March 2008 when Trinity's site was scrubbed and the DVDs were no longer offered for sale.

This outburst happened just one month before the 2004 Democratic Convention, when Barack Obama delivered the keynote address.

UPDATED: It seems really easy for Chicago local media, especially, to determine whether or not this is the right tape of Michelle Obama. All they need to do is pull the tape from this 2004 Conference (particularly the panel Michelle was on), which should be readily available (since this was a very large multi-day event). All a journalist needs to do is watch this tape: if this is not the right one, they'd know immediately and this issue would be debunked. But, logically, this seems to be the most likely source of the tape people have been talking about at NoQuarterUSA.net

Actually, what makes more sense to me is that if someone actually has a tape with her making a rant, they provide it. Then the issue would be confirmed. It's ridiculous to suggest soemone else go debunk an unconfirmed rumor by finding examples of tapes that are NOT the alleged rant!

It's as if I claimed I had a tape of me being abducted by aliens, and I said if you think it's not true, prove it by finding tapes of me NOT being abducted by aliens.

Debunker: Well, here's one of you at your high school graduation not being abducted.

Me: No. That not the one I'm taliing about!

Debunker: Here's one of you at a picnic not being abducted.

Me: Nope! Try again!

Debunker: Here's one of you at Disneyworld not being abducted

Me: Sorry guys, those aren't the tapes of me being abducted that I'm talking about!

It doesn't make any sense. You don't prove something doesn't exist. If you are going to claim something DOES exist, then you prove THAT.
