The Question is thus: What would you consider the "landmark" city of the world to be. To explain my question i will refer to it as this, the "lost city of atlantis" is considered to be the marvel of the ancient world, the city in which the best of everything of the civilization was shown. And the city of Atlantis was lost due to many theories, the most popular being a flood. And to relate this, if say the world were flooded, and another civilization was formed, what would be the city to them as atlantis is to us.

After the Atlantis flood, it was the Sumerians (culture was provided by advanced beings, ie Reptilian Annunaki), Egyptians, Babylon. They were ruled all with the same bloodline of the Annunaki and continue this day.

The Sumerians had an advanced knowledge network and Sumerians artifacts actually depicting the Solar System!

But this is my answer, Atlantis because the whole planet was higher dimensional.

lol! America does not have the best technology, period. Japan does. Also America is not the world power, i'd say Israel or china would be the world power, with the US coming a close third. The US just recently became powerful (after WWII). Like it or not, the world does not revolve around America, as much as some countries would like to replicate it. Thats not to say that America is insignificant, i just think to be calling it the "Atlantis of our age" is FAR off from the truth. Hey i love the country i live in (Canada) and i would love nothing more then to say "Canada is the modern day Atlantis", but looking at the facts in an unbiased point of view, sadly Canada is not, nor is America for that matter.

Oh i would also like to add i disagree with America having the most freedoms out of any place in the world, this may sound biased but i honestly do believe that Canada does have more freedom then the US and who knows, Canada is probably beaten by some other Country.

That is how Japan survives by selling technology. We do have the most advanced weapons technology thou. Also China having the biggest army in the world doesn't make it the super power of the world. America has the best all around military with training,logistics,technology,equipment,and money. We spend over 500 billion a year on our military how can we not have the best lol....... It would be sad if we didn't. Like a poster above said Israel is VERY reliant on the USA for money and weapons. While Israel is a regional power saying they could rank 2nd in the world above the USA....... is very laughable. Where do you get your information might I ask?

typical paranoid american, good on you for sticking up for your country but you just proved why an American city would not be the icon city of the world, because of the one eyed veiw you have of the world, the world isnt all about armies and technology, its about how people interact with each other and come together as a whole, being able to be consious of other cultures and learning from these different cultures and societies, taking peices of personalities and values that you meet to put together your life jigsaw, haha sounds pretty airy fairy but its true, if you say it isnt true maybe your just scared of opening your other eye because you think you have been right all along and it is too late for you, you will never be able to experience anything out of your comfort zone, and saying america is the land of the free is true to an extent but you are controlled by your media and pop culture(money)to name a few, in a much subtle but equally as devious way, as say afghantnistan was controlled by the taliban. I think to choose only one city which were the representative of mankind in that age would be impossible to do today... the developement of the world greatest cities is not so different from one to another to say that there is only one city which could represent all the mankind... there are different things that are considered important (as technology, culture, history, etc) and this things are spread around the entire world. It is not like in the ages of Greece and Rome, when everything was centralized in only one city and country... today everything is much "globalized", and so more equal, less "important" than everything else...

i like all the responses so far, they have been rather varied, but let me push it more towards what i was meaning, so if you had to pick a city where you could define the world's presence eminating from it, like athens or rome were the cities to live in in those eras, what would ours be now, i would call new york city the defining city of the 20th century, because it was pretty much what decided what happened, with wall street and the depression, and the 20th century being a time of great economical expansion for the world.

but its interesting to hear of religious cities as the ones for now, i agree with jerusalem, mecca, the vatican all that, but its interesting, it seems that this century will be dominated by religious strife, or peace, but at the moment it seems that religion is turning the world on its shoulders, yet the religious cities are the place to be, i myself like jerusalem the most, i want to visit it someday, it has a very interesting history, and it is in the most interesting region in the world at the moment, no matter how unstable.

This is an interesting point you make about what will be the defining cities of the next century, of NOW. If I had to choose 10 years ago, I would probably have said New York too, for all the reasons Metaphor said...

New York City. Its the most diverse city on this planet. Theres so many different races of people living together. Theres wall street and theres ghettos. Zoos, aquariums, ball parks, bodegas, subways, drugs, parks, ice skating, big christmas trees, statues of liberties, stadiums, ground zero, grafitti, clubs, bars, 24 hour delis, industrial areas, junkyards, the new years ball, nypd, like 8 bridges, all different types of food on the same block, beautiful women, museums, public transportation, one dollar ke-babs, bong shops, all kinds of shops, art, music, china town, junkies and fiends, blue collar, white collar, black, white, asian, spanish, middle eastern, latino, indian, jewish. Theres a bit of everything, Its the place where people come to make something with their lives. there is just no place like it. and if you deny that then you've never been here.

... and part of the reason would have been that the 20th century was definitely the American Century, and our greatest and most diverse cities might have been considered defining for that era. Now I think the rest of the world is rising very rapidly. It's not that America is necessarily declining, but the rest are rising. The next century will not be an American Century. For most of the last half of this century America has told other countries to be more like us, at least in how you are governed and run --- be democratic, be free-market, be responsible governments, be fiscally responsible, invest in your education, invest in your infrastructure. Many have done so, and are on a fast rise economically. America should be proud that it is the triumph of our best values that have led to a lot of prosperity around the world, but it might actually be hard for us to accept as other countries rise to our level. America will have to deal with the fact that it soon will not be the center of the world. I don't know where the next iconic "Atlantis" will be, but porbably in Asia or Central America or South America. Or maybe the world will have no "center," and it will be impossible to pick just one.

It depends on what you're looking for. A "landmark" city of Christianity might be Jerusalem. A "landmark" city of technology might be Tokyo or Singapore. And so on...
